I'm the same way, so what I did was just left stuff to go back to HD in my truck with the receipt, then the next time I was there I returned everything. Of course I've got plenty of extra stuff lying around from when I didn't want to even bother with that.

Not sure about that, but what we do is just make it with the normal recipe. Then I drink it like that, and my wife adds a little bit of apple juice to the glass when pouring to sweeten it up a bit (and cut down the alcohol too). Might work for you.

One of my kegs has the diptube go to one side instead of to the middle. Perhaps collecting some of those kegs might work well for side-storage.

I second craigslist. Search everywhere nearby to you and you might get lucky. I got a 20# tank & regulator (with a fridge) for free just by checking at the right time. [I'm in a college town and got it at the end of the school year from a landlord who found it in the rental unit & didn't want it]

I would go with both. When I bottle I use a mix of bombers, smaller swing tops and plastic bottles. I use the plastic ones for the beach or for mailing to friends (not going to break, and they weight less).
