Once people find out how long it takes, they usually decide to pass. I do have one friend who is willing to help and has a kit himself. It is a ton of fun but with him around I end up drinking way too much.

I see nothing that seems that bad here. Part of brewing is learning something new each time. As long as you boiled the hops for 60 minutes, no worries. Over that, it will be more bitter, but dont sweat it at this point. I would measure more accurately next time though.

I believe the right size is 5/16", assuming you don't have the 1/2" autosiphon. Just make sure you run hot water over it when disconnecting to make it easier to remove.

Also, curled up in the bottom of the bucket or not makes no difference.

I bet it is the hose. A lot of people break autosiphons trying to get the hose off. Is yours like this?

I have heard the door is the most safe but less practical/attractive. It is not necessary with a johnson controller though.

Fermentis website suggests rehydrating the yeast instead of a starter. What is the expected OG?

Ugh, I hate to keep adding things, but are you making a yeast starter? You won't have the proper cell count with the WL001 without a starter. If you aren't making one, I suggest Fermentis S05. It's a personal favorite plus dry yeast will save some money.
