    IBU Calculation question...

When Tinseth says "The factor 4.15 controls the maximum utilization value--make it smaller if your kettle utilization is higher than mine.", can anyone explain what he means? Just curious what exactly kettle utilization is and how I would figure mine. Diameter vs depth? Thanks. Cheers!

    Man, I love Apfelwein

I would just leave it somewhere inside where there is A/C.

Oops- didn't realize it was a secret :) it'll be buried in this monster thread in no time. That is if a mod doesn't get it first. Cheers!

The cure for your short hose troubles

I tried the water tubing in the dip tube (5' kegconnection.com w/ picnic taps @ 38* F) and my pours were still all foam at 12psi. I turned the pressure down to about 10psi and it was good. At this point I'm good with slightly less carb to get a better pour until I can upgrade my taps and lines...

Boiling Hops with DME or corn sugar for bottle conditioning

I think another thing that would end up happening if you're putting DME as well is increased sediment because you're giving the yeast even more food to munch on besides the corn sugar. Still, if you want to give it a try I say go for it. I'd be curious how the result comes out. Maybe prime a...

Boiling Hops with DME or corn sugar for bottle conditioning

When you say hop flavored wort do you mean water, corn sugar and hops? The longer you boil hops, the more bitterness. I'd dry hop.

American IPA Dogfish Head 60 Minute Clone (AG) & Extract

Did it get stirred up when you racked to secondary? I have to move mine when I'm getting ready to transfer so I try to let my primary sit a while before I start siphoning. Don't know how harmful racking to secondary is if your sanitation is ok, as mentioned above. RDWHAHB! :)

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Just when I thought I had graduated to 5 gal batches I found an Octoberfest Vienna lager can in the man cave. Guess I'll have to brew it up. Darn :) I think I'm going to put a pound of DME and a pack of booster as well as some extra hops. I'm going all out on this one! Cheers!

The cure for your short hose troubles

So I was at home depot today for some living room remodeling supplies and decided to grab some 1/4" od tubing. Shut off CO2 bottle, closed cutoff valve, unhooked qd's and vented keg. Pulled keg out of kegerator and proceeded to unhook dip tube. (anybody know where this is going?) Loosened qd...

    Man, I love Apfelwein

When I was on safari in Africa I had domesticated three rhinos and I can tell you that their farts smell exactly like fermenting apfelwein. True story. :mug:

Mr Beer - Read all about it and ask questions

Did you stick with the recipe? Next time I make it I may add more chinook depending how it turns out. Discovered chinook by accident. Randomly chose it to jazz up a Canadian light I made. Cheers!

    Importance of water profile

Wish I could help answer OP's question but I have the opposite going on. We have a whole house water filtration system with an RO tap as well. I use the regular water out of the kitchen sink (which is still pretty pure) instead of the RO faucet. How will my water affect the beer? Think I should...

So it seems like the water line might be the way to go... I love my starsan!

The cure for your short hose troubles

Why no starsan? I was thinking about trying these ... or the plastic icemaker line. With standard 5' kegconnection lines and picnic taps my pour is WAY too fast at 12psi. One day I'll get some proper taps and go 10' of line. One day. :cross:

    Man, I love Apfelwein

After reading tons of this thread, yes. 1 oz of corn sugar per gal (3/4 cup for 5 gal) and you're good. Carb just like beer. I want to say about 3 weeks.

    Solved: Substitute Yeast Nutrient

+1 If you're out of DME and you want to get your starter going, there are alternatives to "yeast nutrient" from the LHBS. All I'm saying. I honestly did not know that all the best things in life are made of pee. ;) Cheers!

    diy wort chiler

Since I have warm tap water I was thinking of fabricating a chiller with a tank that sits on top of the coil that I could put ice in, then have the outlet lower height than the bottom of the tank so gravity would feed it through the coil then another tank to collect outlet water with a fish tank...
