    too much specialty?

I can't drop the crystal all together since I want that malt sweetness. My goal is to just imperialize a standard American amber and make it a little more on the red side. After looking at multiple amber recipes, they all had about 10-15% crystal malts, so I kept mine to around that but I'm now...

    too much specialty?

This is my first attempt at a 100% made up recipe so a little help would be appreciated. I'm currently stuck on if I have too much specialty grains. I am going for an imperial American amber/red. The numbers are for a 1 gal batch at 70% efficiency. 2.7 lbs 2-row (80% of grain bill) 5.6 oz...

Lagering an Alt- in secondary or bottles?

I am getting ready to brew a German Alt and in order to get the beer to stay very clean I plan on lagering it for 4 weeks. After the primary I will transfer to a secondary and let it finish fermenting but after I reach my final gravity do I need to transfer it to a different carboy and lager...

beer tastes/smells like a fruit salad.

I tapped my Rye Pils last night and it smells/tasts like a fruit salad. I am wondering if the off flavors may have came from fermentation or an infection. It fermented in a temp controlled kegerator for about a month. After 75-80% completed fermentation I transfered it to a secondary and did a...

    First Shoots of The Year!!!

Oh man reading that people in Oregon and Washington have growth already scare me. I live in Texas and I don't have any kind of growth yet. If they didn't make it through the winter it's not because it was cold (maybe a weeks worth of freezing temps) but because I or the bugs last year killed...

Did beetle kill my plant, they are the top off.

My Nugget has been getting eaten alive by beetles. I have caught two in the act, one got away and the other is trapped under a glass for his buddies to watch him die. I got home yesterday to find that instead of just eating some small holes in the bottom half of the plant (about 6th tall right...

How to save the rest of my yeast

For Christmas I got a book of 1 gal. recipes, in the recipe it calls for a half packet of yeast. Is there a way for me to save the other half, I don't want to just dump it out? Oh and the yeast I'm using is Wyeast if that matters.

    Full sun or partial

Unfortunately I don't have the luxury of growing on both sides of the house at this time. I only have one trellis and one rhizome. I know I should have probably purchased more than one but with time constraints and other factors I figured I would just start with one. And it is a Cascade so I...

    Full sun or partial

So I am a noob at hop growing, I live in the Dallas, Tx area and if this summer is anything like last summer it's going to be tough but I am up for the challenge. My question is, since I live in a place that gets upwards of 80+ days of over 100 degrees, very little rain, and a lot of strong...

    Homebrewtalk Carboy Cleaner Giveaway

I need a REAL Carboy Cleaner because I recently purchased a cheap knock-off and the plastic stem already broke and the pads were barley long enough to reach the sides of the carboy.

    Homebrewtalk Carboy Cleaner Giveaway

I need a carboy cleaner because I haven't had much luck with using a brush. A couple problems I have had: 1. I have dropped a GLASS carboy when trying to pick it up and swirl it around to loosen the gunk. 2. I chipped the rim of my carboy with the brush. 3. I am always afraid I'm going to...

Is this "Band-Aid" taste because I used C-Brite?

I had the exact same problem with 2 of my beers. one was because i didnt sanitize the keg well enough but the other one i bottled. After 2 days in the bottle it tasted good and no off flavors but after a week there was a weird taste. After taking it to a friend that knows homebrew he said...

    psi wont stay constant

I didn't tighten the nut down beucase I didn't think it would make that big of a difference but after I get home from work today i will try to get it close to 12 and then tighten the nut down. I shouldn't be low on CO2, I just got it filled and I know I didn't get screwed because the guy...

    psi wont stay constant

I kegged my first batch last night. Everything went.... ok, I guess, but I am having one problem. It seems like my regulator is having a hard time keeping steady pressure. I spent about an hour just trying to get the psi close to 12, it was at about 15 and wouldn't come down for a while...

CO2 in or out of kegerator

Thanks for the info. I can't wait to keg my first beer this weekend.

CO2 in or out of kegerator

Since air gets denser when cold, will that effect the PSI or amount I need to set the pressure at?

CO2 in or out of kegerator

I have noticed that some people put their CO2 in their kegerator while some people have them outside of it. My kegerator is set up to do both so is there a plus or minus to either situation. Thanks.
