    CFC storage (somewhat long term)

OK. I'm not happy about this, but I need to take a break from brewing for a while. SWMBO and I have gone over and over our finances and we're cutting all non-essential spending. Don't get me started on what I consider essential vs. what she does... I'm not too worried about my kettle and...

What do you wish you knew then?

I wish I hadn't spent the money on a SS kettle and instead got a Keggle for 1/3 the price and could be doing 10 gallon batches now, but am stuck at 5 with my 8 Gal. kettle. I could have purchase a pump with the difference in cost... I don't have the equipment for fly sparging but was stubborn...

    Preboil volume question

Just saying it's not all grain absorption.

    Favorite Octoberfest

I generally like the Sam Adams variety. Of the commercial ones in my area, I'd say it's the best. I had the misfortune of trying the Leinenkugel yesterday at my parents house and it was all I could do to drink it without complaining. I'd stay away from that one. Adding caramel color to a Lager...

    Preboil volume question

Also, take a look at your MLT before adding grains. Set it up near a sink or outside and leave the valve open. Add water to it until it starts to come out the spout. Stop adding water and let the water finish flowing. Close the spout, measure the amount left in it. This is the dead space in...

A little late to the party

Product arrived safely 3 days after placing the order. I'll be trying it out with boiling water next week. Fingers crossed!

    Cheap sightglass fitting...

Love blaze379's design there with the return to the kettle. No wort wasted there!

    Allow myself to introduce....myself

OK, so I never actually did this. I've been on this board for about a year now and only recently started posting so I figured I'd introduce myself a bit. I live in Manchester, NH. I started off with extract which I did for 2 brews before stepping up to partial mash where I stayed for about 6...

A little late to the party

So after speaking to Jim Brady, presumably the owner, I had much more confidence and he told me exactly what I needed to get the order in. The only problem at that point was that his site wouldn't allow me to pay him for it :) Talked to him again today and we worked it out, I'll have it for my...

Racking to carboy through CFC with no March pump

So I like the price at WortWizard.com for what you get there, it's a great deal. I still didn't trust the website. However after speaking to Jim (presumably owner) over the phone I was reassured enough to order. However the website was defunct enough that I wasn't able to. Once I get him on the...

A little late to the party

I used the form on the website to ask some questions and haven't heard back - of course if the website is that bad, the form may not work anyway. I should call. I'm not opposed to making my own, It's just that I don't know if I can build one for less than what it costs to buy one assuming that...

Increase mashout temp w/ batch sparging

I always drain my MLT before adding sparge water whether or not I do a mash out. Either way, there is less thermal mass (since you've just drained about 2 Gal) so the water additions have more of an impact on temperature.

A little late to the party

OK, I was going through some old threads here as I often do and I saw a mention of the WortWizard. Curious, I looked it up. It sounds really cool. I don't have the money to put into a pump yet and this looked great since I already have a CFC and ferment in glass carboys. However, their...

Starter: how long to keep on stir plate?

I wouldn't even put it in the fridge. People pitch on yeast cakes all the time that have been sitting in the fermentors for weeks.

    Citra/Cascade Pale Ale

I use Perle as a 20 min addition in my APA. I split my 1 oz Cascade into .33 (First Wort Hop) and .66 7 min addition. I use Magnum for my bittering due to the high alpha rating to help with the cost. Generally considered on the best beers I make and a general favorite of many :) I love citra...

    First Starter Wort Canning effort

Love this idea. My OG's are never in a good range for a starter, but I can definitely dilute some prior to canning.

    adjust grist for new efficiency?

I guess we can just agree to agree then :) When I made the change from extract to AG, I tried recreating some of my older recipes. They didn't taste exactly the same. I'm not sure if they were better or not. They had similar qualities, but were different beers. I imagine the OP will have a...

    The Best thing you've made/purchased

Made: Garden hose CFC - Thanks Bobby_M. Bought: I guess my Brew Kettle. I'm not in love with it. I've made most of my good stuff. If I had a pump, I'd say that for sure :) Man I wish I had a pump.
