Somebody need to buy FedEx a map.

Maybe a good map will help them, because obviously their software is not working. On Friday I ordered something, not beer related but for another one of my hobbies. I was sent tracking info on Friday. It left Georgia on Saturday evening, with an estimated delivery of Tuesday. I even got a...

Have you seen the new Wyeast packaging?

Just stopped to pick up some yeast and saw the new package design from Wyeast. LHBS had some of the older designs and somemof the newer designed packages. Just came in this week.

Just found a real old pack of WY3725. This should be interesting.

I was cleaning out my beer fridge this morning and found a 3 year old pack of WY3725 pushed way in the back, that I forgot I even had. I think my LHBS just gave it to me for free because it was old and he does not like to sell old yeast. I think my original intention was to grow it up to have...

    The mystery of the airlock

This is driving me nuts. Not that I have far to go, but this just makes no sense. I have five sours in carboys and I check the airlocks to make sure they are topped off regularly. There is one ( second from the left in the pic) That always seems empty. I can fill all five to the same level...

Anyone know anything about Wild Beer Co. out of the UK?

I was in the local beer store looking for sour and brett beers to add dregs to some beers I have going. I ran across this. It looks like there is yeast in the bottle so I thought I would pick it up. I have never heard of them but they sound very interesting. I read a lot of interesting stuff on...

    Pretty sight.. Corked and caged.

I have been corking and caging a lot of my Belgian, Saisons and sours lately. Such a pretty sight. I usually do half corked and the other half in smaller heavy Belgian bottles. I got my corker about a year and a half ago. Once I figured out that it is super easy to do, I have been using it more...

    Yeast amazes me....

Wow. after almost 200 brews I am still amazed by yeast. I usually like to keep yeast at the lower end of the recommended range. Doing that I have found that the fermentations are usually slow and controlled. I do still as a habit use a blow off tube. In all the brews I have done I have only had...

    Belgian Tripel Tripel "O"

This brew was done on a whim. I went in my LHBS without a recipe and made it up on the spot. I had a Pranqster the day before and was looking on their website and it listed the ingredients, so I just winged it with this recipe. Even the corriander was not planned, but I had a jar of corriander...

What's with the fraction of oz measurements in recipes?

Is it just me? It seems nuts to me to put fraction of oz's of base malt in a recipe. I recently was looking at a bunch of recipes and saw several that had something like this... 8lbs 4.3 oz. 2- row 2lbs 14.6 oz Vienna. Really? does that.3 oz really matter? Or would rounding off to 3 lbs...

Orval or Jolly Pumpkin dregs for tripel? Coin toss

I have a coin out.. I just racked a tripel to secondary and decided at the last minute to pitch some dregs and let it sit for a while. Pipeline is big so I can just age it for a while and not look at it for several months. Not sure which. Orval sounds good, but then again so does Jolly pumkin...

    Wild yeast capture success

I have been interested in trying to capture some wild yeast for a long time. A couple of months ago I tried it and had success. I made up some 1.020 wort. Put about 250 ml in each of three mason jars. Covered them with cheesecloth. I put on jar under a large pine tree, the next jar in a pear...

    Dubbel Date

This was inspired by a recipe in BLAM that used raisins in the brew.I changed the grain bill some and used dates instead. I have brewed this twice and it is a very nice dubbel. I did this as a BIAB partial mash with a dunk sparge. I get 75% efficiency so adjust accordingly. It is a very nice...

    Pliney on tap in Philly

Just a heads up to Philly beer drinkers. I was at Monk's last night and it was listed on their beer list the Pliney was up next after one of the current offerings kicks. Server said it would be a day or two. So if you want some fresh Pliney on tap a trip to Monk's might be in order.

Any tips for setting up a nitro (beergas) system?

My wife has decided that her favorite brews are stouts on nitro, so she has informed me that I have to get all the stuff to keep some stout on nitro for her. I currently do not keg but I guess I am going to now. I have read a ton of threads about it and it seems it is best to carb the brew...

Anyone familiar with a fridge like this one?

I just picked up this fridge for free and was wondering if anyone is familiar with them. It is a Habco fridge. My wife has decided that stouts on nitro are her favorite brews and told me to go get all the stuff I need to keep some stout on nitro for her. In looking at the fridge it seems...

What bitterness scale do you use?

A discussion in another thread got me to thinking. Someone was saying they like way more bitterness for a certain recipe. It finally came out that he was using Rager and I always use Tinsteth. Out of curiosity I changed the setting in my brew software for one recipe and the IBU's went from 30...

NJ passes new howmebrew law.... for the good.

New Jersey had a law on the books that you had to get a permit $15 to legally brew at home.......yah right ..... Just passed a bill that gets rid of that law. Another good step for homebrewing.
