Wow, fresh mozz is easier than I expected

Milk was on sale last week so I got a few gallons to experiment with. Aside from maybe not stretching it enough times it turned out pretty good and was a lot easier than I thought it might be. Great, just what I needed, another hobby I won't have enough time to appreciate like I should... ;)

    Craft Beer in Germany

So I'm in Germany for work for a couple of weeks. I stopped into the Fristo to mix a 6 pack of beer. Lo and behold I found a craft brewery that uses American hops in some of their beers. Stoertebeker has some great beers. I might have to see about driving up for one of their tours. I just...

    can doughballs tell you anything?

Okay, I've only got a couple of dozen batches under my belt (literally... good home brew is calorie dense), and I've got a question: Can doughballs ever be beneficial (in diagnosing problems)? I've NEVER had a doughball in all of my AG brews, not even a small one. I typically mash at...

    Yellow leaves sprouting

I've got a bunch of 4th year plants. Hallertau, Mt Hood, and Zeus are doing fine. But my Nugget are sprouting as yellow leaves and withering almost immediately. It keeps popping up new shoots, but the leaves are already yellow. The only thing I can think is maybe the Nugget didn't get as...

    The Amazing Disappearing Wort!!

So I used my hop spider for the first time Saturday. Works great for home grown whole leaf. Only problem was that I made a lower hoop to keep the bag open. The surface area on the bottom made the bubbles want to lift the whole thing. The incredible disappearing wort part is that when I put...

    Epic Fail

Okay, which one of you wise guys suggested using a nylon paint strainer as a leaf hop bag?? The most important question being: Why didn't you comment on making sure it doesn't get pinched to the bottom when you put the wort chiller in?!?!?! :smack: 3 hours and $40 in... just 10 min to go...

So I got bored this weekend....

And decided to make a mash paddle. Sure the little plastic one I have works okay, but it has zero personality. :fro:

How much grain in keggle is too much?

Okay, was doing a batch sparge Saturday and ran into an issue. When my MLT gets to empty, it creates a glug which results in a shot of grain and fines. I was hoping to catch this and cut off the flow before, but I ended up with a stuck sparge so this happened earlier than I expected. :( I...

How to use these hops together?

Okay, I've got some homegrown hops I need to figure out a good use for. I've got Hallertau, Mt Hood, Nugget, and Zeus. When I planted them I decided to have 2 low AA and 2 high AA, now I need to figure out how to take advantage of all of them. The Nugget I've got a reliable Nugget Nectar...

    1st 10 gallon - process advice

Okay, I'm getting ready to brew my 1st 10 gallon all-grain (OktoberFAST clone) this weekend. For 5 gallons it's pretty obvious - ferment in a 6-gallon plastic primary, rack and secondary in 6-gallon glass carboy, rack into corny keg and carbonate I have available 1/2 barrel keg, 1 corny...

    F.G. went ?UP? during lagering

I just transferred my 1st AG lager (1st AG, 1st lager) from lager carboy to keg yesterday. (it already tastes great even though under carbonated) Question: going into the carboy SG was 1.014 - 6 weeks of lagering later (between 30F and 50F) FG is now 1.018.... Is that realistic? Or were...

    Step by Step planning

I've got an excel file I made up with step-by-step planning for an All-grain brew day. Is there any way I can upload the file here and have some experienced AG guys make sure I haven't missed a step? I don't have a webpage to be able to provide a URL for it. I'd rather plan ahead than...

Kegged portion is great but bottles taste yeasty ??

Made 2 batches of kit brew in late September. Both had a 2 week primary and a 2 week secondary/clearing. I transferred out of secondary into Corney kegs and from there took a case of each into bottles with carb tabs before force carbonating the kegs. My problem: the kegs taste great but...
