Batch Sparging: what's your setup like?

I'm sure my setup is pretty similar to everyone else. I put my 10 gallon mash tun on top of a table, then vorlauf and drain first runnings directly into my boil kettle. After adding sparge water, I let it sit for ten minutes or so, vorlauf again, then drain into the boil kettle.

    Trying to use less star-san

I mix StarSan in a spray bottle, which usually lasts at least a couple brew days. I run out of StarSan maybe once or twice per year.

Best/ most reputable website to buy equipment?

Midwest Supplies and Austin Homebrew both have reasonable prices. You should check out the vendors list on this site as well.

    Help evaluating crush

I don't think you would benefit from a crush much finer than that. The endosperm from the barley appears to be well separated from the husks and you would likely just be making flour if you went too fine. Unfortunately, I do not have any input for you as far as a fine crush causing...

    Help evaluating crush

Makes me wish I had a grain mill. Personally, I think all three look very good. I don't see any unbroken husks. The third grind looks to be the finest, which could result in higher efficiency for you but may be problematic if it causes a stuck mash. I would just experiment with it! Cheers:mug:

    Boulevard Brewing Company Labels

I believe I've seen this one, but have not bothered picking up a bottle. Definitely going to have to give it a try :mug:

I highly recommend picking up Boulevard's Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale.

    I'm replying, I'm replying, I'm.......not replying

Funny, I do the same thing all the time. I'll think I have something relevant to add, and then realize I'm pretty much just regurgitating/rearranging what's already been said.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

If anyone here is a fan of mystery or CSI type shows, then you need to watch Luther. I enjoyed watching Luther way more than CSI and I would say it's ALMOST as addicting as Dexter . Now I just wish there were more seasons.

    GOOD on Netflix STREAMING?

Agreed. I felt like the last 1/4 of the movie sort of dragged on. Otherwise it was awesome and I still gave it five stars. This has probably been mentioned before, but Ip Man and Ip Man 2 are FANTASTIC even if you aren't into martial arts movies.

    Sparging... difficult

First of all, your pre-boil gravity will always be lower than your post-boil gravity due to evaporation that will occur during the 60+ min boil. Sounds like you've pretty much got the mashing/sparging process correct. Allow your initial mash to sit for 60 mins and then drain. If you are batch...

    Actual REAL Breakfast Stout

I agree that OJ and bacon probably wouldn't fly with this one. However you could do a breakfast stout with oatmeal, coffee, and perhaps some maple syrup or lactose sugar (milk sugar) added. However, the maple would thin and dry out the beer, whereas lactose would sweeten it so it depends on...

Can I get some opinions on my setup?

Easiest cooling method for your fermentors is probably to set up a water bath with ice packs. I have been using this method since I started and it has worked well. I can maintain temps in the 65-70F range by swapping ice packs twice per day.

    Electric coffee grinder reccomondations

I used a Cuisinart burr grinder for a few years and it way okay. Relatively even grind, but it will clog over time so I would periodically have to clean it out with a knife or chopstick. I think they run about $50. I also support Arturo's comment, although I have not figured out how to hook up...

American Pale Ale Kona, Fire Rock Pale Ale (AG Clone)

Just an update: I finished bottling this beer about two hours ago. Tastes great, and there were no apparent problems with fermentation. FG was 1.012. The beer was crystal clear and tasted great right out of primary:rockin: Can't wait to try it in three weeks!

    Arabian MacGyver Stout

Awesome. I'm very interested to see how this works out for you. I especially have not heard of using bitter melon or alfalfa for hop replacements. Keep us posted! Cheers

    Gambrinus honey malt?

My entire grain bill was 14.75lb, so 1lb = 6.7% honey malt. I've never tried a recipe with 10% honey malt. I imagine it would be a pretty dominant flavor, but with enough hops to balance it out, it may actually turn out nicely.

    Cleaning nylon bags

Mine are all stained green from hops. I typically just hand wash mine with a bit of dish soap. They don't have any smell at all.
