    Using Keg as secondary fermenter

Thanks everyone. I am actually getting 6-7 bubbles per minute so I am wondering if I should wait a bit longer before doing the 70 degree rest?

    Using Keg as secondary fermenter

I have an AHS Vienna Lager that is still bubbling a couple per minute after 16 days and have a couple of questions. I have not done the rest yet and was wondering if some people do the entire fermentation and lagering in the carboy vs racking to a secondary? The recipe called for doing the...

    Newbie to Kegging

Turns out neither of my posts were notched and the store can't figure out how I got two posts of very similar types. Bought two used posts that are easily identifiable, plus a new black QD and I am in business. Thanks everyone for the great feedback.

    Newbie to Kegging

So, I looked inside and the post that has the black QD has the long tube, so I must have swapped the posts during cleaning? I marked the keg with beer and gas at the posts, had the down tube at the right location but I guess I screwed up the posts upon re-install, (so I was placing black on...

    Newbie to Kegging

Okay, I will give that a try as soon as I figure out how to get that black disconnect off :). Curious that I was able to get beer flowing even though I had the QD swapped? I may have to just back out the black QD while on the post and buy a new QD and post...

    Newbie to Kegging

The way I displayed the pics may have been confusing, so just to confirm... The "naked" post shown is what I was using for gas in (could have mixed this up during cleaning since it worked fine on the 1st batch). The pic with the black disconnect is what I was using for beer out. The long...

    Newbie to Kegging

I used the keg the first time after buying new, and while it worked ok, it was really hard putting on the QD for the out post. The pic below without QD is the gas in post. I had such a hard time getting the QD on for the beer side, the pic I took below is with the QD on (if that is of any...

    Newbie to Kegging

Basically a new keg (bought new and 2nd use). Had a hard time the first time as well. Now discovered as I kegged a batch today that I have a leak at that post... I supposed it is possible to buy a new out post and down tube and swap it out with beer in the keg (as long as no pressure)?

    Newbie to Kegging

I have a QD for the beer line that is crazy hard to lock. I had to put a towel over the QD and tap with a hammer to get it down far enough to seat/lock - is this an uncommon thing?

How can I make this tap handle work?

My wife bought a really nice tap handle for me but we now see that I apparently needed one with a female end? Does anyone know if we can make this work with some type of adapter? The thread sizes are also a little bit different which may complicate matters even more.

Accidently stirred up some sediment prior to kegging..

I guess taking the FG sample and carefully moving my glass carboy still stirred up a bit of sediment right before I am ready to keg. Should I wait to keg, try to put some type of grain bag or something over the end of the tube when syphoning, or just go for it? Sorry for the newbie question.

Didn't top off enough on my 5G batch...

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I don't feel so bad now.:)

Didn't top off enough on my 5G batch...

So I bought one of those glass big mouth bubblers and didn't realize until too late they don't have Gallon markings on the side. Estimated the 5G mark and it now looks like my fermenting batch is around 4.5 to 4.7 G (no wonder the OG was high..). I will be kegging this batch (first time)...

Took OG before adding last G of chilled water...

Fantastic, this is just what I needed. Yes, I took my reading at 75 degrees so I think I am good! Thanks so much.

Took OG before adding last G of chilled water...

So, I jumped the gun and pulled my OG sample prior to adding the last gallon of water to reach 5G. Is there some way to calc what my OG would have been if I was at 1.076 for 4 gallons? The ESB recipe I used as my base did not have specialty grains (I steeped .5 lbs each of munich and...

Decreasing from 3G to 2G boil to aid in cooling time?

Thanks everyone. I am glad I asked this question (my searching tries were not successful as I had a hard time wording the query correctly). This forum is always a great resource!

Decreasing from 3G to 2G boil to aid in cooling time?

Thanks for the inputs. I am going to try sitting my kettle in the sink surrounded by some ice water to help speed the cooling process. The need to maximize the boil volume escapes me. If you are going to "water down" the boil to reach 5G anyway, it seems that the concentration will...

Decreasing from 3G to 2G boil to aid in cooling time?

The last time I had a 3 gallon boil for a 5G batch, I had a much harder time getting down to pitching temp. I was wondering if it is okay to decrease the boil to 2G (or 2.5G) so that I can add 3G of cold water to arrive at a 5G batch and reach pitching temps easier? My usual technique is to...

    Will this size frig work?

I was wondering if a standard 21x21x32 dorm frig would allow me to put a 5 gallon bucket inside for fermenation? I figured someone had tried this before, and before I buy one I was curious if it would fit since it looks like the door depth may eat up quite a bit of inside space. Thanks, Drew
