    dimensions: corni/corny

I've been debating recently on switching to a kegging system, and have warmed up to the idea of going the Cornelius Keg way (BTW - is it referred to as corni or corny?) Before I start looking at purchasing however, what I really need to know is the over all dimensions. I bought a 7.2 cu ft...

    bubbly

I just wanted to let everyone know that the Irish Red brewed on Sunday and now in the primary is bubbling along nicely. I'm having more fun with bubbles than I ever did as a kid.

    Wyeast and pitching temp

Yesterday I brewed my version of an Irish Red. All things considered, it went well. I did have 2 areas that were outside of my expertise: boil over (see other post) and temp vs. yeast pitch. I'll focus on the yeast for this thread… Everything went well after boil. I took OG reading and...

How many hot breaks can there be?

I just used my propane burner yesterday for the first time, and all I can say is it is MUCH BETTER than worting in the kitchen. That being said, I had 3 seperate hot breaks during boil/worting. Do I need to monitor my burner more closely? Is this possible? Each time I caught it before...

    Movie quotes: keep it going

Ok, I have had a few home brews tonight, and am feeling *happy*. I just loaded into my VCR one of my all-time favorite movies: Shawshank Redemption and cheered when Red said: "I'd like to think that the last thing that went through his head, other than that bullet, was to wonder how the hell...

    Nuthin' Fancy: Pancho's Pride Porter

Named after our black cat. When we lived in Brooklyn I found him nosing through the garbage in Feb 2001. He was frost biten on all paws, nose and ears, and had an infection in a wound on his right hind foot. The Vet said if we hadn't rescued him we we did, he probably would have died in a...

Pancho's Pride Porter: Day 10 in a bottle

I sampled my porter last night (10 days in the bottle), and it tastes like a porter! Just needs some more carbonation time, then we'll be ready to enjoy as is and have Black & Tans if we want! Just wanted to share the joy :ban:

    removing labels: uh-oh, mold

I was recently given @ 60 bottles, and decided to start the label removal/cleaning process tonight. Most of them are ideal for re-use, especially since I have quite a few clear (New Castle) and green (Rolling Rock) bottles these are ear-marked to replace. However, I noticed in one of the 12...

    'The' podcast reference thread

I've just recently learned that there are at least a few folks out there who create pod casts for home brew/craft brew. I was wondering if folks recommend any of the pod cast they have stumbled across: For those of you who are thinking "eh? pod cast. What in the wide wide world of sports is...

    Wort chiller 101

Having both read and discussed with the fellas at LHBS about all the upside of a wort chiller, I was all set to get copper tubing and parts at my local hardware store when at the last minute I decide to reference The Complete Joy of Home Brewing for suggestions on length of tubing. It is then...

taste test passed with flying colors

My wife and I returned from the happy holidays at her folks place last night and we went out for dinner to our local brewery/restaurant (BJs). While enjoying BJs take on an Irish Red and slice of our Chicago style pizza, I told her that I'd like to sample my first home brew when we went home...

Help! Need a mini fridge for primary/secondary temp control

Although I've done some research in the forums, I haven’t yet been able to find an answer to this question: I’m wondering what commercially available mini fridges are big enough to allow a 6.5 gallon plastic bucket or 5 gallon carboy so that you can better control temperatures during primary...

Bottling day: Sediments in carboy and adding bottling sugar

I bottled my first batch of home brew this past Saturday, and everything seems to be going well: -My FG reading was 1.0125 -Color looked very typical of a Pale Ale (Cooper’s) -No malodorous scents The carboy was siphoned down to approximately 1 ¼ inch as there was sediment that just...

When to take a 1st stage hydrometer reading

Brewmasters: I've pitched my first batch of home brew (Coopers Real Ale) in a 6 ½ gallon plastic bucket on 12/2 and have been monitoring the daily progress of temp and frequency of the airlock bubbles. Everything seems normal at this point and is only a matter of hurry up and wait. However...
