How to add permanent volume markings to a kettle (illustrated)

It shouldn't be straight, it should be sloped to account for thermal expansion. I thought we discussed that already... ;)

Small batches taste acidic and slightly sour, but big batches just taste yeasty

How large is large? 1 cup is an awfully small amount for anything other than about a gallon max.

How to add permanent volume markings to a kettle (illustrated)

I tried to replicate the citric acid passivation process outlined in this document. http://www.astropak.com/downloads/technical_papers/boeing_passivation.pdf It definitely changed the appearance of the etching, but not to degrade visibility. I haven't seen any issues with rust, but I can't...

    Multiple fermenter temp??

My experience has been that measuring the surrounding air beside a carboy, with a fan running, and a reasonably wide hysteresis, holds the beer temp the most constant. Anymore I just dangle it close, nothing fancy.

That looks like stainless, definitely not tin. Make sure you have solid connections, alligator clips work well on the lip of the pot. Use a fairly wet q-tip. What is your power source? Are you seeing any visible signs?

Metabisulfite is good at reducing hexavalent to trivalent. Most of us have it, just dissolve in solution for added measure of safety. I'm sure Ward would test, but then you might turn your house into a superfund site when it leaks to the epa. Kidding.

Same at Hobby Lobby. Go to where glass etching, stained glass, and clay modeling supplies are kept. They aren't with the other stencils in paper craft.

Regular old #2 pencil works fine even under water, just don't wipe dry too hard

I'm also adding whole leaf hop absorption in a tiered half ounce scale as a delta relative to the hot water mark. Ok I'm not, but please somebody build the quad-scale ubber pot and post pics. File it under "just because you can".

How to add permanent volume markings to a kettle (illustrated)

I'm that anal. I did all my measurements based on the bottom of the line. I marked with pencil where I would measure a meniscus in the lab. Why? Because I care a lot about precision, but not so much about accuracy. So my measurements are based on ambient, because that's all I care about. At...

Pepsi Can Fridge Converted Into a Fermentation Cooler

I did the same thing with an aquafina chiller. They're all the same brand or two. It works brilliant, but I can only lager at 34 F unless I bypass the thermostat. I highly recommend a brew hauler or diy equivalent. I rack directly from the carboy while it's in there...

Bottling partial batch and kegging the rest

I do it all the time. I also do the thing people say not to and add sugar directly to the bottle. If I bulk prime, I do it in a 1 gallon jug, and use an auto siphon to bottle. More often than not I go straight from carboy to bottle after the keg is full.

A legal analysis of Maine's prohibition of beer ABV labeling

Wouldn't they still be able to list OG if known, and that should at least give a ballpark idea. I see OG listed more and more frequently in my local brewpubs, along with IBU's, and ABV.

    Replacing chest freezer lid?

I did it, and it works fine. I used 1x4 poplar for the sides, and osb for the top since it's dimensionally stable. Everything glued and screwed. It was a prototype, so I covered it in black canvas... still there two years later. For insulation I used two layers of pink foam you get at home...

First time all grain - Overestimated my abilities vastly

You could try partially freezing it and pour off the more concentrated beer. I'd let it ride though, nothing wrong with small beers. Your process isn't terribly far off, and you should be fine with the next one and a little research based on your available equipment.

    Partially filled bottle

I have a small collection of 8 oz bottles I put into the queue at the end. I've been thinking of getting some 4 oz just for those days when I don't want a full bottle.

[Initial Release] RaspberryPints - Digital Taplist Solution

I've been following that other thread waiting for the release.

    StarSan ruined my beers

Well I can tell you starsan does not taste like soap. I took a large mouthful out of the wrong glass once. It'll wake you up, but even the aftertaste isn't what I'd call soapy. There is nothing special about CO2 that causes foam that shaking wouldn't also cause. If you shake milk it will also...

    Never throw out beer??

So you added light lme, honey, and molasses to completely un-hopped beer? If you don't like it now, you never will. I'm assuming it fermented out before bottling.

    Budget thermometer

I have two Thermoworks digital thermometers that display "LLL" all the time, new batteries, reset, nothing. I liked them when they worked, but I'm a bit annoyed with product quality. The book says "return for repair"when you see that. People seem to like the thermapen, but I have a bad taste in...
