    Efficiency Confusion

First, I would like to say that I finished an AG brew session in less than 4 hours today. It was incredible. 5 Gallons of my haus pale ale. That included clean up. I guess when you factor in the 45 minutes I spent grinding 12 lbs of grain, it was 4.75 hours, but I did that before breakfast so...

    Anyone use this malt mill?

I have been getting my grain crushed at my LHBS, but I'm only getting about 60 efficiency. I suspect my crush has a lot to do with this as my temps are accurate, my thermometer is calibrated, and I do everything pretty well I think. I want to start crushing my own but don't want to throw down...

My Hefeweizen Turned Out A Little Thin And Light--why?

My first all grain batch was a Hefeweizen. It has a nice flavor, but it's more subdued than I want. It's got a nice tartness, a tiny hop flavor, and really nice estery profiles like Franziskaner. However--the mouthfeel is a bit thin (thinner than most Hefe's I drink) and it has a tad bit of...

To have and to hold, or to giveaway (nervous about my potential first competition)

There is a deal around here called Mashfest. It's basically just an event where local brewers showcase their beer. Folks pay $10 to show up and sample it (not to the brewers, to the venue) and give away prizes. You're supposed to bring 2 gallons with you (keg or bottle). I've never entered a...

Is this a good idea? (Two test IPA batches)

I've never made an IPA and I don't have much experience with hops other than Cascase, Nugget, Centennial, and Tettananger. I want to perfect an IPA and I just got a bunch of hops (Galena, Citra, Simcoe, Cascase, Centennial, Spalter, Tett, Hallertauer). I'm not sure how I want to use these...

    Getting in over my head

I've been brewing for awhile, and just spent like $80 on my MLT. I'm already in a few hundred bucks on my keg fridge and kegging setup, wort chiller etc. Well today I bought a chest freezer. It's going in my dining room as a bar. I'm going to paint it black, install a three faucet...

How does this tower look for my freezer kegger?

http://www.beveragefactory.com/draftbeer/towers/triplefaucet/D4743TT_chrome_three_faucet_beer_tower.shtml That seems really cheap. Anyone have any experience with something like this?

    The Mystique Of Bottling

I only ever bottled one batch of beer. Well two, but on the first one I put in 4 cups of corn sugar instead of 4 ounces, that was a dumper. From then on it was kegs only for me. I liked having beer on tap, and it was so much easier. Having recently uped my production, I kind of need to...

Okay to use old dirty bottles if cleaned?

I came across about 30 longneck bottles last night, perfect for homebrew. I usually keg but I have a hefe I want to bottle as I feel it'll be truer to style, and that way I can get my Pale Ale on tap etc. etc. That's not important. I never thought I was going to bottle again, and my...

Can I secondary 5 gallons of Apfelwein in a 6 gallon carboy?

I am making a 3.5 gallon Pilsner and 3.5 gallon Hefeweizen sunday and I will have my two 6 gallon fermenters tied up. I have 5 gallons of apfelwein sitting in a 5 gallon better bottle. I will need to lager my Pilsner obviously, and I don't want to lager it in a 6 gallon carboy as I'll have...

    Finished My First AG!

I kicked my dead guy keg yesterday and decided to do my first AG brew sesh as an IMPROMPTU BREW SESH! Bad idea, lol. I already had the recipe drawn up, and the Seahawks were losing 38-7, so I ran to my LHBS at 4 pm and picked up my ingredients. I began calibrating my long stem thermometer...

    problems bottling off keg

I went to fill a swing top off my keg. I froze my bottle for an hour. Bled my keg of pressure, turned the psi to 5 and slowly filled down the side up to the neck. Capped it immediately and put in the fridge. Opened it 4 days later and it was flat. Did I leave too much heqdspace? I don't get it.

    Worried about my apfelwein (mold?)

I've had this going for about 24 hours and there appears to be little white mold spots on top in addition to little bubbles. No airlock activity. I sanitized everything pretty well, and poured it in. Been sitting at about 68 degrees. Never had an infection, but this white **** doesn't look...

Filling Swing tops from keg--How long will beer stay carbonated?

If I want to fill a swing top bottle from my keg (the beer is already force carbonated), how long will it stay carbonated? Is it essentially like bottling? Will it stay carbonated for 3 days? 3 weeks? 3 months?

Help me understand how much water to use

I am having a hell of a time figuring out sparge and mash water calculations. Check out my recipe and planned calculations here and see if I'm understanding this. I've tried using online calculators but it seems like I'm going to have TOO MUCH water. My setup is a 5 gallon brew pot, a 10...

    Old Wyeast Packs

I've got 3 packages of 1056 and 3 packages of 3068 Wyeast Activator packs that've been in the fridge for almost a year and a half now. I had completely forgotten about them until I found them buried at the bottom. I got them for free because I know the owner of wyeast through a friend...

Do I need to soak my brass fittings (mash tun) in vinegar?

I just put together my mash tun and I really don't want to take it apart. My question is--is it really necessary to soak my parts in the vinegar/hydrogen peroxide mixture? Will it be okay if I don't? If I need to, do I only need to soak the internal components (the brass nipple and barb on...

Anyone ever use a plastic bucket as a mash tun?

I ended up spending more $ and time building a 10 gallon mash tun from a cooler than I wanted to. So I returned everything and bought an 8 gallon mash tun from my LHBS. It's basically just a brewcraft bucket with a false bottom and spigot etc. They say they use it all the time when they...

    Just wanted to share this..

Last night the woman and I went to Chevy's for dinner with her family. When asking what they had on tap I was read a list of four beers. "Dos Equis, Bud, Tecate and Hefeweizen". I responded, "Which Hefeweizen?" To which the waitress gave me a confused look and said "There's more than...

Help Diagnose My Beers Off Flavor

I've made a few extract batches now (going all grain on my next batch) and my last two have had a strange "off" flavor to them. My latest is Rogue Dead Guy clone. Granted I haven't tasted it carbed up yet, and it's only been about 4 weeks, but it's still a bit odd. Here is my process...
