Gardening 2024 - Whatcha got going on this year?

In central WI I usually planned to get my seedlings in the ground in mid May. With a general "15% frost chance after this date", I've been bit 4 out of 5 years. Now I just put seedlings out first week of June. I am trying out early sowing of carrot seeds. Put in 200 ft of carrots at the same...

    Scaling aroma hops

I was wondering this recently as well. Since you'd desire a consistent amount of total oils in the dry/aroma hops, but most recipes or packages only list the AA%. So did the AA just slip, or is the total oil content equally affected? Just questions without answers...

    Any HVAC experts out there?

This is how I got familiar with various 480V systems at work. Just stick your finger in there and don't stare at the arc flash.

    The "Dear" , "Sincerely" thread

Dear Mini-Me - I am well aware of our agreement that if you are dressed and have your teeth brushed before 6am, you can have a cartoon before school. And that 4am is before 6am. But you still have to wait until 6am for your cartoon, so go back to sleep. Sure, I'll wake you up - just...

That's pretty much the gist, with the caveat that I am still assembling my care package for @bailey mountain brewer . Because I'm slow.

    Any HVAC experts out there?

Start simple, and just verify all the wires are intact and not grounding out somewhere. Can you be in two places at once? If your breaker trips instantly when the compressor is called to run, there's a dead short somewhere. If there is a delay before tripping, your compressor is simply locked...

Gardening 2024 - Whatcha got going on this year?

Garlic is looking really good with this warm spring! Naturally, I haven't gotten my cold weather stuff in the ground yet. Onions and celery are started and I need to start pretty much everything else this week: cabbage, tomatoes, peppers, squash. Goodness, I need to go through the seed...

    outdoor brewing

In the Wisconsin countryside, I was usually fighting a combination of weather and insects and seldom got that magical "lovely brewday". One winter day was flirting with -20F and I froze the chiller hose between setup and use, and needless to say the ice cold keggle was a bear to clean with...

Why didn't anyone ever tell me to buy a grain mill sooner

Well, allow me to be the first then: Yo @SacSudz , a grain mill is a super awesome investment for anyone doing all grain! But seriously, the consistency of having my own mill for the last 13 years has let me chase down a myriad of smaller inconsistencies in my process. My $30 Corona mill has...

    Happiness is: Home malting

The malt must flow! I had good success with even growth using a large graniteware canner and 7lbs dry malt at a crack. Naturally this was feeling a bit slow after the first sack. I still don't have anywhere clean with stable temperatures to couch on the floor. So my first attempt at minimal...

    Pressure cooker decoction mashing

I've never done a real decoction mash before, so take what I say with a grain of one-sided salt. I wouldn't claim the pressure cooker makes a better or different end product, just the process is "better" from a simplicity/foolproof standpoint. In my case, it fits seamlessly into my process...

    Upsizing to 50 gallons BIAB

If you don't mind me asking, is this for beer, or "spirited" malt extract? Because that's quite a volume desired, and IMO PID grade precision isn't necessary unless you are making beer, or totally in the bag before the mash is over.

    Let's Raise a Glass to @Bracconiere

Kegged up my citrus 100% home malted wheat brew. 5.4% ABV, 10 day turn around, and 12 cents per pint. Prost from a Penny Pinching Brewster.

    Cast iron cookware "reconditioning"

I'm going to guess that you'll have a pitted mess by morning. My best luck - either reclaiming surface rust or even with Lodge pre-seasoned - has been to use sanding disks until pretty damn smooth, and then at least two good seasoning cycles on a outdoor grill.
