Any other brewers in Butte MT?

406 is not quite open yet, he brewed a batch this weekend, so he should be pouring soon.

lower final gravity than beersmith calculates

Beersmith estimates final gravity by assuming the %attenuation of the yeast you're using, however, yeast have ranges of attenuation. It may be your fermentation process provides a good environment for attenuation, so you are getting to the higher end of attenuation. If your beers are turning...

What are the specifications of your setup? Tubing diameter, length of tubing, etc.

Any other brewers in Butte MT?

Bozeman Brewing Company is certainly an interesting atmosphere, but the beers can be good. Certainly wouldn't go as far as saying it sucks, but I am partial. Also, there is a new brewery opening in Bozeman any day now, 406 Brewing. Don't know anything about how the beer will be, but I have...

    Is this "hot break?"

Yeah that is hot break. Probably more pronounced with the higher protein content of the wheat malt.

    Newby re-pitch help

Just a general question, as I am not as familiar with Wyeast. Isn't the slap pack similar to a mini starter? "Slap" it a few hours prior to pitching and it should get the yeast going? Wouldn't the bag begin to expand from CO2 production? That should be a sign if the yeast were good or not.

Any other brewers in Butte MT?

Howdy from Bozeman (we have the same problem here). Sorry don't know any other homebrewers in Butte, best of luck. If you are ever in Bozeman and wanted to chat over a pint or two let me know.

First Batch Racked to Secondary.....What next

Most of the current opinion on the use of a secondary is that you don't really need to. The exceptions will be beers which you intend to age for long periods of time or maybe dry hop. You can do a complete fermentation in the primary vessel and then move straight to bottling/kegging. In your...

First Batch Racked to Secondary.....What next

It is an addicting hobby!! If you have a corny ready to go, ever consider using it as a secondary, one less transfer. Rack into the corny, throw it in the fridge if you have space, it will clear faster in in the cooler temp. The first pint may have some yeast in it, but just toss it, or drink...

    Consistently low Original Gravity

I will try to address a few things, for the sparging slowly part, the main reason would be to avoid a stuck sparge, by opening up the valve all the way it creates pressure that may compact the grain bed, making it hard for the liquid to move through. And 68% is not that bad of efficiency, the...

    Can I rack to secondary?

It may be ready, but it wouldn't hurt to wait another day, take another gravity reading to be sure that it is done. To reiterate upon pkeeler, the use of a secondary is probably not necessary, just another chance to mess up.

    Newby re-pitch help

yes. Boil some water, cool it down (90-100 F) and throw the yeast in there. Let it re-hydrate for 15 min or so then oxygenate and pitch as usual.

    Rye Barleywine and partigyle input

The Northern Brewer Blog had a recent related entry if you haven't seen it yet. http://northernbrewer.blogspot.com/2010/12/rye-wine-parti-gyle-experiment.html

    Yeast Starter for Multiple Brews

I have taken a similar approach when brewing multiple batches. I took the approach of making 2L of starter / 5 gal batch. I then homogenized the starter and pitched 2L into each when it was time.

how to use and store yeast vial

Too cold is frozen, the cooler the better. I agree with the others on the starter, a good, relatively easy way to get those yeasts on track for a healthy fermentation.

how to use and store yeast vial

If you are keeping it a short time, it may not be a problem. However, the longer you keep it warm, the higher the potential the yeast will begin to use up the reserves in the vial, and the quicker they will go through autolysis. They are packaged to maintain viability, but they can only do so...

how to use and store yeast vial

Store it in the fridge and remove it a few hours before pitching or making a starter to reduce the potential shock and wake them up.

COLD weather brewers - do you use your fridge in winter?

I am going to second pwndabear! It is likely the fridge wouldn't run due to it being colder than the temp setting. I recently brought my kegerator inside due to the cold Montana weather (convenient but dangerous). Eventually, when sufficient funds are available, I plan to place a small space...

Same carboy for primary and secondary?

I have done this multiple times, before I had 2 carboys. The only possible downside may be increased potential for introducing oxygen from more transfers. But as long as care is taken during transfers it should be fine. Keep experimenting!!
