    BIAB -- What Happened??!

So I figured I'd follow-up with a little information after my second BIAB. Brewed a Kolsch yesterday. My target final volume was 5.71 gallons with a an OG of 1.053. I hit the volume (I think... see #4 below) and ended with a OG of 1.052. Here's some changes I made and things I noticed...

    BIAB -- What Happened??!

Yes, the one-gallon boil off estimate is based upon the 2-3 extract full boils I've done with the same pot. As far as measuring volume during the boil, is there an easy way to do this without a site glass? I'm assuming that marking the inside of the kettle isn't an option...

    BIAB -- What Happened??!

Hmmmmm.... Well, looking at the math, things are starting to become a little clearer now. Sounds like it's a combination of a number of things. (1) Losing 1 gallon per hour or so means that with an hour(+?) mash and 55 minute boil (considering the 10 minute post-mash boil), I'm going to...

    BIAB -- What Happened??!

Thanks for the tips on efficiency. As far as hitting temps, I hit the protein rest spot-on, though the temp dropped about 2-3 degrees by the end of the 30 minute step. I was a little high on the saccrification, but no more than 4 degrees (again, with temps dropping to my target before the end...

    BIAB -- What Happened??!

Hello all, I just finished my first AG batch using the no-sparge BIAB method. I followed this recipe exactly, though I double-milled the grain at my local homebrew store: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f71/austin-homebrews-blue-moon-clone-ag-30190/ So calculating the recipe out on...

Adding LME to Water Prior to Heating?

I'm using a false bottom... Wonder if this will discourage scorching by slowing some the LME from dropping to the bottom (and giving me more time to stir it in)?

Adding LME to Water Prior to Heating?

Okay so I'm moving to full boils... likely with a 6 gallon final yield. I was reading this article (see #3)... https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f37/10-tips-better-extract-brewing-100861/ ...and noticed that one of the reccomendations for a liquid malt extract brew is to turn off the burner...

Worried about my boil kettle build... would love your thoughts

Sorry for the multiple posts but here is another concern that crossed my mind... What about wort scorching? Will the false bottom encourage scorching/darkening of the wort because it acts as sort of an insulating layer?

Worried about my boil kettle build... would love your thoughts

thanks for the response... but could you tell me what stratification means? :D I did some math on the volume of water that the hops will have to travel in... here is what I came up with: Height above false bottom: 4.5 Inches Diameter of kettle: 15 Inches So... Volume of water above...

Worried about my boil kettle build... would love your thoughts

Looks like I might not have been clear... The 6 gallons sits 4.5 inches above the false bottom. The false bottom is 2.5 inches above the bottom of the pot. So you are right, there is about 7 inches of total liquid, but only 4.5 inches x 15 inches diameter is available for hops (as this is the...

Worried about my boil kettle build... would love your thoughts

Hello All So I'm finally moving to full 6 gallon boils (extract only for now). I have had a plan on how to set up my boil kettle based upon gifts I got from Christmas, but I'm having some serious second-thoughts. Here's what I've got: (1) 10 Gallon SS Boil Kettle (15 inches diameter x...

Pre-Chiller w/ Smaller Tube Diameter than Immersion Chiller?

Hello All, I currently have a dinky little 3/8" diameter x 20 foot immersion chiller. Since I'm moving to full-boils, I am planning on building my own copper immersion chiller. Right now I'm thinking I will go 1/2" diameter x 50 feet. BUT... my hope was to use the dinky immersion chiller I...

Thoughts on False Bottom WITHOUT dip tube for Boil Kettle?

Great, thanks for the responses! :mug: It sounds like it's not a necessity, but I could always install a dip tube underneath the false bottom, which would have the same effect of saving wort. For now I'll just leave it be As far as all grain... it 's totally going to happen, just need (1) $$$...

Thoughts on False Bottom WITHOUT dip tube for Boil Kettle?

Hi Everyone, So I'm looking to get a 10 gallon SS stockpot with weldless fittings to use as a boilkettle -- just now upgrading to do full-boil extract brews. I use whole leaf hops exclusively, and an immersion chiller. One of my local brew shops sells a custom-built false bottom that fits...

Late Extract Add + Wort Chiller

Thanks for the reples... Re: StarSan... I've got a different sanitizer for my kegging system (AAA maybe?) It's the plant-friendly stuff. Will that do the trick as well, or does copper need the more hardcore cleaner? If it will work, how long should I soak the chiller for? (I've got an...

Late Extract Add + Wort Chiller

Hello All, First time post. I've been reading articles about the late addition of extract during a boil, and am contemplating doing so during my next boil. I'm actually quite excited -- every single brew I've done for the last 6 months has been FAR too dark in color. In any case, I...
