    Dry hop timing, refridgeration

So my dfg 60 min ipa will have been dry hopped for seven days on Saturday. I was planning on cold crashing before bottling but I've got a small problem. My fermentation cooler is also housing a seven day old milk stout. Should I bring the milk stout out of the chamber for a few days, or just let...

    raise OG 2 points

hi all, If I want to raise the OG of a recipe from 1.042 to 1.047, how would i do that? My current understanding is that i need to add about 25 pts to the entire batch ( 5gallons * 5 pts ). If DME yields about 40 pts per pound, could i just add a small batch of wort with 10oz DME? If this were...

    Ale fermenting at 55 deg

Hi everyone, Ive had a nugget nectar clone with a strong fermentation for 24 hrs at 68 deg. Over night it dropped to 55 deg. It is wyeast British ale yeast. Any lasting effects on the beer? It's still got bubble activity.

    fermentation cooler

Does anyone use their fermentation cooler to cool their corny kegs as well? I figure a one carboy cooler could probably fit a small co2 tank/regulator/corny keg setup.

    excess heat during fermentation

I think the problems with my previous brews have been the result of poor temperature control - I am considering buying a freezer to use for a fermentation cooler. I was wondering this: Say I am brewing an ale that calls for fermentation temps of 68-70 degrees. After brewing, the wort is...

    keg timing

Hi all, I have a family reunion in june and id like to set up a keg of my own beer at the party. My question is this: How long in advance should I set up the corny keg for serving? I'll be driving there so the keg will be subject to the motions of the car. Is it unrealistic to travel and serve...

    5 Gallon batch

Do you always add 5 gallons of water? or do you bring the final volume to 5 gallons? i ask because that would affect the OG

    Does anything like this exist.

hey guys i was thinking of a few projects i could start and i was wondering : "Is there any device for homebrewing that can constantly measure Gravity and temperature and communicate with a local computer or cell phone". Sounds like it might be a fun project. let me know if you guys think this...

    more temperature/fermentation concerns concerns

I brewed cream stout on thursday night; i pitched a Wyeast Lab pack. The carboy and wort have been a steady 68 degrees since then; dropping to 64 last night. Fermentation hasnt seem to have started yet;there hasn't been any airlock activity. I measured the OG on thursday night, ~1.040. What...

    Palmer's Cincinnati Pale Ale

so about two month ago my cincinnati pale ale batch was done bottle condition. to my dismay, it was pretty awful. i waited until this week to try a few more; 4 for 5 were barely drinkable, while the one was fantastic. could anybody guess what went wrong? my bottles were sterilized.

    Yeast count

hey so i've had a beer racked to secondary for about 3 weeks; i've been too busy to bottle it. Do i have to worry about there not being enough yeast to carbonate/condition the beer? there does not seem to be any sediment. thanks, Jderm

    "Oops" fermentation woes

hey guys, my second batch of beer was the "Cincinnati pale ale" recipe from 'How to Brew'. I had maintained a temperature of 70 degrees for about two and a half weeks, then the other day, i forgot to check. The weather has been pretty warm, and now the fermometer up to 76. my question is...

    Bad taste, bottling day

Bottled today. As the bottling bucket was filling the last bottle, i took a sip. It tasted great a week ago, then today it was awful, hard to describe. Just murky, like pond water almost. I'm hoping it was only because it was towards the bottom of the bucket. Possible protein and crud left over...

    Sanitizing Old Bottles

So i bought 48 bottles from my LHBS, mostly clean with a few tough spots. I soaked them in Oxiclean for about an hour, then went to town with a bottle cleaner. I got most of the visible junk out of the bottles, but there were a few stains that couldn't be dislodged. Before i bottle, they be...

    Bottles-getting them

so I'm pretty low on empty 12 oz bottles, and bottling is theoretically in two days . Has anyone ever just paid the deposits and gotten empties from a bar?

    Boil Volume

For my first brew, i used 1.5 gallons for the boil, then added that to 3.5 gallons of water. I am now reading that the Boil gravity can effect the bittering hops, and ultimately the IBU. Is 1.5 or 2 gallons enough or should i upgrade to a bigger brew kettle?

    fermentation cycle

So my IPA is a little under two weeks old. The airlock was bubbling continuously the two days after the yeast was pitched, then it more or less stopped. I looked at it today and its bubbling one every 10-15 seconds. Why did it stop then start again? is this alright? -jderm
