Strange Looking Yeast Cake in Bottles. . .

Thanks Revvy. I was just curious as to the potential for my beer to be infected and manifest itself in this way. Though my yeast cakes in my other bottles haven't looked like this, all have come out well. Good info about the yeast cakes looking differently based on the ingredients, process, etc.

Strange Looking Yeast Cake in Bottles. . .

The beer is moderately clear, but nothing like commercial beers. I attributed the slight cloudiness to the yeast (WB-06). The beer tastes fine and the bottles show no other signs of contamination (ie the tell-tale white ring around the neck), so I'm gonna chalk it up to trub. I know some trub...

Strange Looking Yeast Cake in Bottles. . .

This is a weird one. I brewed up my third batch, a honey wheat and bottled it about a month ago. Tonight I enjoyed a couple and before rinsing out the bottle I noticed that there are some strange, very dark patches on the yeast cake left in the bottle. It almost looks like mold, but not...

    5 gallons = 42 bottles (12oz)

I have only bottled two batches so far, but both gave me 47 bottles, so I would say 42 is not unreasonable. If you are doing partial boils it could be a function of how you measure your makeup water. The marking on your bucket may not be very accurate.

Refrigerating beer then warming it back up?

Its definitely not soap from the glasses. Its happened with three bottles, but my first batch has great head and good retention. I am betting this is from not enough head retention grains (none). This was an all extract batch with a can and a couple more pounds of fresh LME. My first batch...

Refrigerating beer then warming it back up?

Hey all. I finished bottling my second batch a couple weeks ago and preparing for a party I foolishly put 12 in the fridge and a few more for my enjoyment. Well I cracked one open to find very little head, much to my disappointment. The beer seems well carbed, but I only get a thin layer of...

    I lost that much beer?

I didn't even take into consoderation that the trub and yeast and hops would absorb liquid. Now it makes perfect sense. Combine that with my loses, I know where my beer went. Thanks IrregularPulse.

    I lost that much beer?

Well I bottled my first batch of home brew last night and I was extremely excited. I had my 53 bottles cleaned and sanitized and was prepared to fill them all. Once we got out routine down my SWMBO and I finished in about an hour, including clean up. The down side, I only produced 47 - 12oz...

Geez. . .How many mistakes can one new guy make?

I think I may make this quote my signature. Phenomenal.

Does this sound right to you?

Well I am still a new brewer with my second batch under my belt, but I have some questions about it. Last weekend I went to the LHBS I was going to make the Cooper's Real Ale according to the directions on the package, but after some assistance from the owner, the recipe was altered a little...

Geez. . .How many mistakes can one new guy make?

LOL! That is a great idea. My only problem with that is that I would feel guilty. She has been extremely supportive of my brewing despite not liking beer and living in a cramped one bedroom apartment. But I will definitely keep that one in mind. Too bad my fermenter already has more beer in it.

Geez. . .How many mistakes can one new guy make?

Last night I was preparing to brew my second batch when SWMBO "convinced" me that I should go to the grocery store with her. I had all my gear together and had already made up some sanitizing solution and was sanitizing my tools. We got home and it was late, so I just ate and went to bed...

    n00b mistake...how bad is it?

mattmuir, thanks for the encouragement. I am beginning to think that my beer really is getting better all the time.

    What kit should i buy???

I also vote for the kit from William's Brewing. As a new brewer myself, two things I wish I had were a larger kettle and a wort chiller, both of which you get with the William's kit. The kit I bought from my LHBS was very similar to the Midwest Supply Kit you pointed out and I bought it before...

    n00b mistake...how bad is it?

Geez...If its not me trying to ruin this batch its everything else. This morning as I left for work I noticed my AC froze up and was no longer blowing cold. I called the office as soon as they opened and this evening when I got home from work the repairman was just leaving. So my AC was off...

    n00b mistake...how bad is it?

Thanks for the support guys. I was just apprehensive about my first batch and worried that it would be a disaster. I think it will be ok, but now I have another question. My given situation is not ideal for brewing (living in a loft apartment) but we have a half bath that stays considerably...

    n00b mistake...how bad is it?

Hey everyone. This is my first post about my first batch. Unfortunately I didn't do my due dillagence before brewing and fermenting my first batch and now I have a problem. I fermented one week in primary and racked into a secondary after getting consistent FG readings. When tasting my beer...
