    DIY False Bottom question

Yeah, I just re-read your first post, I guess I didn't read that last part. You definitely want a 10 gallon. I started with a 5 and it was a pain.

    DIY False Bottom question

It looks like you have enough there to cut out 2. What about doing that then putting one on top of the other and mis-aligning the holes and tack welding them or tying them with ss wire? Its kind of what I did with my first mlt. Free is too good to pass up.

    Primary Dry Hopping

When I dry hop, I do what you did, then put a muslin bag over the racking cane when transferring to a keg or bottling bucket. I'd rather see all the little hop flakes mixed around in the beer, seems like you'd get more out of them than bunched in a bag, but it probably would turn out about the...

    Fruit question

I'm going to be making a berry wheat beer this week. I moved up to 10 gallon batches and would like to do a 10 for this beer (bottle 5, keg 5.) From searching, it seems the best results come from putting the fruit in secondary, but I only have 2 fermentors. I've never used a secondary, I go from...

I may have to change banks.

I ditched a bank a little while ago when I tried to make a withdrawal from a savings account. They somehow didn't have enough cash (it was only like $1500) and tried making me pay for a money order or cashier's check. When they wouldn't waive the fee for the cashier's check I told them to empty...

    What's your profession?

The plant I work at is small in fossil or nuclear plant terms, we produce 90mw, and send 80 to the grid. There is an 80mw solar park in Canada that has like a million panels spread out over 950 acres. The most output from a wind turbine is I think about 4mw, so you'd need room for 20 windmills...

Grrr, this guy needs a grain mill...

I built my own for pretty much free with cut-offs they were throwing away at work. If you have a little experience with and access to a mill and a lathe, it's not too complicated to do. If you had to buy the metal stock, it might be simpler just to spend the money on buying a pre-made one...

    New homebrew laws in Wisconsin

Wisconsin must be a crappy state to live in. I own an old military Jeep truck (M715) and the sites I go on concerning that always seem to have threads about Wisconisin gov't tryin to limit military vehicle ownership and whatnot. Now homebrewing too? The must have a strong anti-hobby lobby. Less...

    What's your profession?

Waste coal (waste anthracite=culm, waste bituminous=gob) is coal that isn't good enough quality to sell as coal for industry or home use. Anthracite is about 12,000 BTU/pound. We burn waste anthracite that's about half that in specialized boilers. I'm not a miner, but I believe its mostly found...

    What is this?

Whatever it was, is probably gone now. My ceiling this morning: I forgot to list 2# sucrose in the ingredients. It was chugging along nicely yesterday all day, and I was checking it fairly often to make sure it didn't look like it was going to blow off. Apparently this yeast was...

    What is this?

I know it isn't blood, the only injury this brew day was burns to fingers when I was picking up a pot with sparge water. I tried to think of everything that could've possibly gotten in there, no one was wearing red, the yeast pack wasn't red. Really weird...

    What is this?

This is my tenth brew. I've never had any sanitation issues, and can't think of anything red that could've gotten in the wort or yeast starter anywhere in the process. Yet when I went to check on the progress earlier today, I saw a red splotch that almost looked like blood. I was on my way...

Where can I find Nelson Sauvin Hops?

No problem, glad I finally got to post something useful.

Where can I find Nelson Sauvin Hops?

Don't know for sure that they're in stock here, but they are usually good about noting when stuff is out of stock. Keystone Homebrew Bethlehem, Montgomeryville PA Seasonal Hop Offerings

    No gas release

My guess would be that there has to be a leak somewhere letting the CO2 escape, bypassing the airlock. If you're using a bucket, it's probably the lid gasket. You said you can see the brew, so I assume you're using a carboy. Maybe there is a small gap between the bung and the neck or the airlock...

    MUST SEE Homebrew Video (NSFW)

That's hilarious. "I'd like to make a pale ale that tastes like grapefruit" is my new stock line for any beer related question whether it fits or not. How much did you have to pay Steven Hawking to do the voice over?

    Exploding yeast??? Video

Is it just CO2 escaping from the trub? Gases are more soluble is cool liquids as opposed to warm ones, so maybe as it warmed up the CO2 came out of solution. It looks pretty cool.

What is the "worst" beer you like? Your guilty pleasure, if you will...

I agree with that statement. Yuengling is the go-to beer in my area for block parties, weddings, whatever. I never really paid it much mind because it was so ubiquitous, but I quit drinking for about 2 years, probably didn't have a Yuengling for like 3. I had one after that long hiatus and I...

someone help me understand different type of gasses used to boil.

I'm guesing you're using a turkey fryer? Boiling anything is just a matter of heat transfer, and it takes longer to transfer enough heat to boil 5 gallons than it would 2.5. If you can do anything to keep the heat from escaping into the atmosphere before transferring through the kettle, try...
