    moving back to PDX!!!!

FifeLee; Best of luck in Great Falls... It' not the most cosmopolitan city in the world, but the people are really nice. Also, the beer and wine shop attached to 2J's Produce has a nice selection of good beers, and there is a LHBS just of Central Ave downtown which has a reasonable selection...

    moving back to PDX!!!!

I've certainly heard about FH Steinbart's and have seen their website and it looks pretty good. I might have to pay them a visit later this weekend. Thanks for the response David42. Cheers

    moving back to PDX!!!!

Hey there, I'm not actually new to HBT, I've been around for almost a year or something by now... But I'm moving back to my hometown of Portland, OR, and wanted to introduce myself to any brewers that might live in the area. I also figured that maybe somebody here has the skinny on the...

Minimum Equipement For All Grain Brewing ?

I just use a glass lab thermometer, it works fine for me. Most thermometers these days don't use mercury, but breaking glass is a valid concern... And there is really no need to leave the thermometer in the wort while you are boiling it, you really just need it while you are heating water and...

What became of the Lobuck Challenge?

It crosses my mind all the time. I'm not really sure if I would participate or not (I hardly have the time to brew as it is) but I was hoping to hear about a bunch of bizarre recipes using feed-store millet and so forth. I'm surprised about the lack of enthusiasm; people seemed so into it a...

    Nottingham Yeast in Cider

You have 1,453 posts here and are worried about what the guys at the LHBS say? I must say, I've been to several homebrew stores where the people were pretty uninformed. Nottingham will be great. (not that I've made more than five gallons of cider in my life)

What became of the Lobuck Challenge?

Yeah, I certainly got that sense. Just sort of wondered if anybody made any interesting recipes or had any successes. I also wasn't sure if it happened and I just missed it.

How many gallons of EdWort's Apfelwein have been made?

Made some a couple of weeks ago, so... 1366 gallons total

What became of the Lobuck Challenge?

I'm just sort of curious because somebody mentioned it in the "college kids" hooch thread. Did anything ever pan out? Did it just sort of lose steam and go away? I did a search, and found the original threads, but nothing too recent. I thought that it was a sort of fun idea, even if it...

    500ml starter from dry yeast

I'm not sure why you would bother making a starter from dry yeast unless you were unsure of its viability or something. But regarding your question, how long has it been? You may have already missed the fermentation, or it might not have started.

    Ipod shuffle? How many podcasts...

I'm with iBeer. I too have a shuffle, and I use it every day. I also have an older 20gig mp3 player that I almost never use anymore. And it has a non-shuffle function as well. Finding the track that you want to listen to can be a pain if you don't queue it up on your computer before hand...

If i need something else im gonna b POed! but i will buy it neway

I'm not really sure how that would affect flavor, but if your pot is 8 gallons I don't think you have a problem. If it is seven, then you maybe have a problem, but a pretty small one.

Is it possible to use a bucket as a makeshift keg?

For all of the talk of Mr. Beer, I have yet to encounter one myself. I have seen the plastic bottles that have the little tap that dispenses with CO2. I'm not sure that I completely understand where the OP is going with his bucket idea, but from what I understand I'm not sure that it sounds...

If i need something else im gonna b POed! but i will buy it neway

I would say that you are cutting it close, but not too close. I think that you can do it. I think that Yooperchick uses or used some strange system using two five gallon pots or something and had it work out fine.

Is it possible to use a bucket as a makeshift keg?

It would not hold enough pressure to keep the beer carbonated.

    Northern Baltic Porter question...

I haven't used safale 04, but I would say that 05 would be fine.

    AG vs Extract: Less Farts?

It seems to me that homebrew flatulence is (to some degree) a symptom of drinking green beer. At least that has been my experience. I haven't noticed any substantial change after switching to AG.

    Truly amazing video...

Puts that keggerator that I've been wanting to build into perspective... I've been watching the Cosmos series lately, and although it is a little dated it is so far from being out-of-date. Really amazing stuff.

thin pot: What are the problems... and a proposed solution?

I also use the 44Qt version. I like it; the pot is a little thin but not bad at all. No problems with scorching, comes to a boil pretty quick, and it was cheap.
