I think a sightglass is not absolutely necessary on a boil kettle if you are confident in your measurements going into the kettle. I prefer to have one on my HLT. That is where I find a sightglass most useful.

If I had it to do over again, I may consider a bottom drain HLT and possibly even the boil kettle. If I used a keg for a MLT, I would definitely drain that from the bottom.... I think. :)
