    Irish Blonde ale

March/ April Brew your own Magazine states " when the first bits of foam form at the begining of the boil, removing the chuncks of coagulated protein from it with a strainer can improve the clarity and flavor of your beer." I've tried this with my last two brews but have not gotten to the...

    Totally wrong hop

    Totally wrong hop

The wort spent a hour total boiling and I threw in the NB hops at the last 25 min of the boil. I figure that I might have a hoppyish type kolsch. Or even something like an English pale ale.

    Totally wrong hop

Just wanted some input on my latest screwup. I left home brewing for a few years and decided to start with a few kits to get back into it. I brewed a Midwest Colonge Kolsch kit this weekend. About 30 min into the boil my propane tank went dry ( I really though I had enough!). So I covered the...

what to do with this honey?

Thanks for all the responces, I guess I'll take your advice and dilute it down, pasturize, and ferment it all. I like the idea of making a base mead, then I could rack it over any kind of fruit next summer as they come into season. I've got 51 gallons of various wines and Mead in carboys right...

what to do with this honey?

I pasted this thread from another forum that I was not getting any responces from. The honey has been sitting in the garage for the last two days and I'm sure it's pretty frozen. How long can I leave it there? Do I have to use it all at once? All my carboys are being used right now. I could do...

what to do with this honey?

Hello, I've been making beer and wine the last few years and recently wanted to try Mead. I put together my first batch, a cyser, yesterday and it is fermenting nicely as I speak(write). I went to my LHBS today and he had a pail of honey (50pounds) that had just started to ferment on it's own...

    White wax on my beer

Okay , haven't brewed a batch in a while. I was just going to bottle my pale ale I brewed several weeks ago and found a layer of white waxy stuff on top of the beer! I used my own hops to dry hop. Never had this happen before. I checked it three days ago and it was fine. Any help is appreciated

    Preparing wort chiller

Got a new immersion wort chiller for christmas. Now it's summer and I want to use it. I heard that you should clean it first so that you don't get all that oxidation in your beer. Any tips as how to do this? boil it?

    using home grown hops

I want to brew a IPA using my cascade hops I grew last summer for the aroma and dry hops. Problem is I don't have a clue as to the IBU of these hops. Not sure how much to use . Should I weigh out an ounce or what. Any one have any experience at this?

    Murder in the red barn

Bird, I asked you about this beer about a year ago and you said the recipe wasn't finished yet. I haven't been to this site for awhile but noticed the recipe in your profile. I brewed it a couple of weeks ago. I hit all the numbers perfect! I keep my brews in our small computer room this time of...

    sour smell

Last saturday I brewed a Siason Belgian Farmhouse Ale Clone from the 150 classic clone recipie mag. I hit all my temps and the FG was right on. It called for orange peel, cardamon, and coriander. The yeast was White labs WLP565 Belgian siason 1. The question I have is the first few days of...

    Old Yeast, Still Good?

I have a White labs Saison 1 yeast with a "best before date" of June 6th thats been sitting in the frig. My LHBS says to use it but it'll take an extra day to start. What do you guys( and gals) think? I just got a bug up my butt to brew today

    Ready to bottle?

Wait till next weekend and check the gravity. You can't really go by how many days it says to wait, go by the gravity reading. If your fermenting colder than what the directions say it'll take longer, sometimes a LOT longer. Patience grasshopper.

    Air lock or gravity?

'Cmon guys, what do you think?

    Air lock or gravity?

Okay, the american pale ale that I brewed on new years day is still in the secondary after five weeks. I took a sample and the gravity is 1.010, which is the FG on the recipie. The air lock was burping every 3 minutes untill I move the carboy and shook things up a little. Now it burps every 1.5...
