    1st AG....whew!

I strongly advise against the Corona mill!!! I have one, and every time I brew, the settings have to be reset. It's too easy to bump the wing nut that sets the space between the grinders. Also, I invariably get about 1/4 of the grain as dusty flakes, and about 3/4 of the grain as either cut...

    Pumpkin adding question

I like parallelelary the best. Try to say that without smiling! Where is Waveland, MS? Denham Springs is a suburb of Baton Rouge, by the way. I see that you keg condition (I assume that means natural carbonation). I force carbonate with CO2. It's faster, and there's no sediment in the...

    Pumpkin adding question

I've transferred my pumpkin ale to secondary carboy. A few surprises were in store for me: - I found that the slight amount of pumpkin that went from the boil pot to the primary is very difficult to keep from transferring to the secondary via the siphon hose. Turns out cooked pumpkin pieces...

    low original gravity?

Next time more grain and depending on my actual beer versus trub yield of this six gallons, I may boil down 5.5 gallons. Thanks for all of your help. Predicting about 3.5% alc./v. I guess we can just drink more beer and still be able to drive!

    low original gravity?

I have a big propane seafood boiler with 15 gallon pot. It gets up to a tremendous rolling boil. Roll baby Roll!

    low original gravity?

6 lbs of 2 row 1 lb of Vienna 1 lb of Belgian Caramunich 1 lb of Medium Crystal single mash for one hour at 155 degrees. Fly sparge with 170 degree water to make approx 9 gallons of wort. Add pumpkin to wort. Boil for 60 minutes. Yields about 6 gallons. Cool with copper coil wort...

    low original gravity?

I have just finished brewing a pumpkin ale...smells great! However my original gravity reading is only 1.036. This seems low. I used 9 lbs of various grains and about 7 lbs of pumpkin for a 5 gallon batch. I guess pumpkin doesn't yield as much sugar as I thought. Any one else run into this...

    Holy Moley Yeast is Expensive!!

I used a generic yeast for my first two wheat beers, the second of which turned out GREAT. The first was a watery, Bud Light tasting disapointment (poor mash efficiency). I then used Wyeast's Hefeweizen #3638 for my third wheat... using the same ingredients and painstakingly similar process to...

    Pumpkin adding question

That was my second thought, but my picnic cooler/mash tun may not be big enough to store 9 lbs of grain and 6-8 lbs of pumpkin...its only a five gallon cooler. I think I'll go with the pumpkin in the boil. I'm assuming that the pumpkin will sink to the bottom of the pot, so when the boil is...

    Pumpkin adding question

Thanks for the info. I'll have to see how much 6-8 lbs of pumpkin really is. It may be the sheer volume that makes my tentative plan a no-go.

    Pumpkin adding question

Brewmasters of the world, lend me your ears! I have seen several recipes for pumpkin ales. Most, if not all, full-mash recipes state that the roasted pumpkin meat should be added directly to the boil then transported to the fermentor. The brewers then go on to lament about how much trub is...
