Making your own rhizomes by layering

For anyone who wants to increase the number of plants they grow without having to buy them, this is probably one of the easiest ways to do it. Essentially, what you're doing is to take one of the many shoots that emerge from your crown each spring, and instead of training it up a string or...

    Keg carbing 2.5gal vs 5gal

Has anyone split a 5gal batch between 2 kegs and force carbonated them? I have about 8 selections of hops grown from seed that all have very unique/desirable aromas. Not having large amounts of some of them, I've decided the best way to assess aroma would be to brew a generic pale ale and dry...

    Downy Mildew

Finally got around to training a Chinook today and found a Downy Mildew infected shoot. Kinda odd because we haven't had any rain to speak of in a few weeks and the humidities have been relatively low. The number of shoots and the density of foliage on this particular crown most likely added...

    Year end maintenance

With some nice weather and a little time this weekend I buried three 5 gal buckets that had rhizomes planted in them this past Spring. The first two I had no problem lifting but the last one was anchored. After a little digging I was able to keep the majority of the roots in tact so I decided...

    Rhizomes after one year

Being that we haven't had a Winter so far, I used the day to do some digging as the little girls are starting to wake up. These Canadian Redvines were planted last Spring and were, for the most part, planted horizontally to see if they'd elongate any. Just to show y'all what happens over one year.
