    Which Alt is which

I've been part of this discussion in the past and to this date have never had a solid answer. I was told again today that WLP 036 and Wyeast 1007 are the "same yeast, from the same brewery in Dusseldorf" I don't know and have tried to find out even asking at most, and all of the larger or...

    Anyone washing Lager yeast?

I've looked back as far a 2009 trying to find word of wisdom regarding the washing of Lager yeast. I have been able to find the same questions about the subject but no real answer or even anyone that indicates that they wash Lager yeast with any regularity. So my question is pretty simple, is...

    Perplexed about Pilsner

I've been using a lot of pilsner malt lately trying to learn more about how to use it best. I have noted that no matter how I treat the mash I seem to loose some of the malt flavor as I condition. When the beer comes out of the fermenter the flavor is great but then after conditioning I am...

    Fat Tire Yeast

I harvested some Fat Tire yeast from cans of Fat Tire last year and used some of it to make one brew. Everything went well at that time and I saved some of the yeast for later use. Recently I woke it up with a three step starter and was amazed by the activity/health that I ended up with in the...

    What are the odds?

I had about 25 vials of washed yeast in my refrigerator when it stopped cooling below about 48/50 F. The yeast was that way for about a week and I have not ever opened the vials durring or since. What are the chances I have a big problem? I have been afraid to try using any up to this point.

There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza

I am having trouble with my 6 gal fermentation bucket lid. I have purchased two lids and used them on the bucket in the past 6 months or so but have had cracks develope in the plastic on both of them. The cracks are an extension of the spot along the edge that you can cut to get the lid off...

    Too many hops

Is there such a thing? I was able to get some hops recently at a price that made me take all that was available. The hops are between 2 and 3 seasons old but have been vacum packed in mylar/foil bricks and frozen at or near 0 F. I would like to check out their viability without having to make...

    Anyone know this keg

I got the last of my kegs to convert into keggles this past weekend and am ready to start drilling. I got what I believe is an old Miller keg that I am confused by. There is no weld on the bottom where the skirt would be welded on. There is only a weld about the mid-point of the keg. Does...

    Yeast Harvest

I posted something similar a short time ago but have decided to put this up again just because I am at a loss. I have had two batches of yeast that I have washed recently, WLP029 and WLP001 that have acted pretty much exactly the same way. First I get a huge harvest of yeast with little...

Keggle Users, There has got to be a better way

How do you clean out your keggle style mash tun? Once in a while you see one of the tippy plate rigs posted but, if you don't have that how do you get the spent malt out and ready for your final wash down and back flush? Somebody out there has got to have a better way for this less than happy...

Removing the core from a sanke, SUPRISE!

I at last got a used sanke 1/2 bbl keg. The problem is that when I went to remove the core I found out that it had no lock ring. A friend told me that it was an old keg from Europe. It sure smells like Guiness when I release the pressure but, I have no idea how to remove the core at this...

    OUCH! Frozen Yeast

When I got home last night I found that 4 bottles of yeast that I had washed and stuck in the back of my refrigerator had frozen. They were not frozen solid but most of the wort covering the yeast was frozen, some more than others. I had not intended to freeze the yeast and had not prepared it...

Single Tier RIMS with only two pots

I am starting to think that I can build a single tier, direct fired, RIMS using only two keggles. Maybe I am just behind the times and these are common but I don't see them and can't find them on this site. I would love to hear from anyone that has one or can tell me the errors of my thinking...

    Plate Chiller and Cold Break

I am starting design work on what I think will be a single tier, direct fired RIMS. I am thinking about using a plate chiller in the new build and I came up with a question that I have been unable to find an answer for. What happens to cold break material if you use the plate chiller? Do you...

    March pump on RIMS build

I am getting set to start work on a single tier, direct fire RIMS with a single March pump build. I have a question about recirculating through the pump while directly heating my mash tun. I am concerned about the amout of malt/trub that would circulate through the pump. I have a false bottom...

    Erlenmeyer Cleaning

How do you clean/sterilize your Erlenmeyer flasks if you don't boil in them before using them for propogation?

    Yeast Harvest-New Belgium, Fat Tire

I have been wanting to try and harvest some Fat Tire yeast for a while now. Santa brought a Stir plate so I am giving it a try. I have been washing for a while now but have never harvested from a commercial. I used the dregs from a 6-pack and added to a 500 ml starter and nutrient. I put on...

    I'm Confused

I'm lost! I have been kegging and serving with a picnic tap for some time and ready to build a Kegerator. I am unable to find a discription of the parts that I need to build the taps in the door of the Kegerator. I have kegs, CO2, and regulators. 1.) I know I need a tap (sounds like...

    Multi-temp Keezer

I have been trying to decide if and how I can build a keezer that will have two or more chambers with different temps in each chamber. The idea is to be able to lager and or ferment in one chamber while at the same time using the second chamber to serve cornies out of. That means one chamber...

    Rogen trub a-plenty

At long last I have brewed a Rogen that I like, it took 75% rye malt to get it but it tastes good going into the primary and the secondary. Here is the catch, I had a good 5 inchs of trub on the bottom of my primary and as a result lost some beer going into the secondary. Anybody else brewing...
