    Question about taking Hydrometer readings

Last night I kegged my beer after 10 days fermentation. I took a reading after it was kegged and the hydrometer sat around 1.000 which under the ABV column is 0% alcohol. Am I reading this incorrectly, or have I just made beer with no alcohol by not letting it sit long enough or something...

    Finally!!!!!!!!!!!

After brewing AG for 2 years, I finally "get it". What's that mean? It means I understand what to do, how to do it (for the most part) and the end product actually TASTES like beer! I'm not trying to jinx myself, but I made an AG IPA 2-3 weekends ago. It's been dry hopping in the kegerator...

It's gonna rain, should I brew??

Do you guys ever brew in the rain? I have a garage and based on radar, I'll be finishing up my boil right when it rolls in at 2pm so I'll be able to roll my rig back into the garage for the cooldown. Thoughts? Tim

    Question about yesterday's brew

Hey guys, I brewed a Northern Brewer Mild Ale yesterday. Everything went relatively smooth, but at the end I ended with just under 5 gallons in my kettle. To compensate I went in the house, took 5 bottles of spring water and boiled them for 10 minutes with a cup of light DME. I then dumped...

should I follow beersmith or use the 1.4qts per lb rule

Beersmith is telling me to mash with 4 gallons, the 1.4qts per lb rule is telling me to mash with 2 1/3 gallons for my 6.625 lbs of grain. Which should I follow? Thanks! Tim

    Let my yeast get warm

Hey guys I am brewing a pale ale from Northern Brewer and it came with a Wyeast smack pack and ice pack to keep it cool. I've kept it cool up until last night. I pulled it out of the kegerator to put something in and left it out on the washing machine overnight. We had the AC on but I don't...

Will the chocolate mellow over time?

I brewed a Stout extract kit and added a cup of hershey's cocoa. Right now after about 2 months it's still a bit chocolatey for my tastes. Will it mellow over time or will the chocolate flavor stay this way for the life of the beer? Thanks! Tim

    C02 leak Question

Hey guys, last week our fridge died and I shoved what I could in the kegerator. I remember hitting the c02 bottle connector and when I looked the next day all the c02 had leaked out. I got a new bottle and hooked that up last Friday. Last night I looked at it and the bottle is empty again. I...

    Kegging Question

Hey guys, yesterday I kegged 10 gallons of IPA to two Corny Kegs. Since I only had room for one keg in my kegerator, I flushed the oxygen from the second keg several times and then put it back down in the basement to continue fermenting. Was this wrong? Do I need to keep C02 on the keg to...

    Vanilla Stout

I'm going to brew an Oatmeal Stout and I'm going to go the vanilla bean route. I've been reading tons of posts about when to add the bean and whether to soak it in vodka/bourbon before using it. Many of the posts suggested adding to the secondary. However I've taken your suggestions on not...

    Dry hopping in corny kegs.

Good morning, I kegged my IPA Thursday night, dry hopped the kegs and then put them in the kegerator connected to the C02. Should I have just flushed the o2 out of the kegs and left them in the basement at 70 degrees, or was it ok to put them in the kegerator at 40 degrees as they dry hop...

    Mash out temp

Beersmith says for mash out to heat the water to 168 degrees. I have a pump for recirculation and can bring the mashtun (keg) to 168 before collecting the first runnings. Should I do this or do I just mash at 152 and then after an hour collect the runnings from that and then strike at 168? Or...

    Trying new recipe

Hey guys, I wanted to get your opinion on this. I was gonna head to the store and pick up these ingredients but wanted to make sure the recipe looked decent. I scaled it in Beersmith so want to run it by someone who knows what it should look like. Thanks. 10 Gallon Batch: 14.9 lbs uk 2 row...

    During Fermentation My A/C Died...

After 2 weeks of fermenting, my A/C died Friday and the temp in the basement where I ferment got up to 80 degrees. I brought the buckets up into my bedroom where I have a window A/C unit, but they sat in the basement for at least 24 hours at 80 degrees while I wasn't home. Do you think I have...

    Beersmith Question

Hey guys, I just found Yooper's 60 Minute clone and downloaded the file and imported it into Beersmith. If I change the batch size from 5 gallon to 10 gallon, along with the type of brew equipment I'm using, is it safe to assume that everything scales up properly? I'm worried because I'm not...

    One fermenter bubbling, one...nothing.

Hey guys, I brewed an American IPA (AG) Saturday, OG was off by .006 I believe. Forgot to take a reading before moving to the fermenting buckets. I went from the kettle into 2 - 7 gallon fermenting buckets. Both cleaned the same way, etc. Last night everything was going crazy in the...
