Adding Lactic Acid to Saison - When and how much?

Thanks for the advice. I am planning on bottling, so the heavy carb option is not really viable. I was thinking a subtle addition of maybe 5 ml for a 5 gallon batch. My question with doing it at bottling time is would this affect the carbination process since the ph has been altered?

    Kegging without any refrigeration?

As I have limited space and no keggerator I was curious if it was a possibility to keg in a typical 5 gallon corny keg, leave at room temp for an extended period of time taking off beers in growlers or bottles as desired, and still have decent beer? I can't see this being that big of a...

Using bare minimum of DME in partial mash

This is exactly the type of information i was looking for. Thanks! The less math I need to do the better! avidhomebrewer - how did you fit 10# into a 5 gallon pot? What did you use for the sparge and/or boil?

Using bare minimum of DME in partial mash

Thanks for the replies guys.. I guess what I am saying is that I cannot afford any more space for other brewing equipment, and I was looking for a way to calculate how much DME to add to make up for my lack of mashing ability. I have mashed 4 lbs before in a mini mash with no problem, but...

Using bare minimum of DME in partial mash

I have 1 5 gallon pot and 2 2.5 gallon pots. I had considered doing exactly that but I had been using one as a mash and one as a sparge/boil.

Using bare minimum of DME in partial mash

I have done about 4 partial mash beers and I do not have enough space in my loft for a complete all grain set up, so I am going to keep making PM for the foreseeable future. I use the stove-top method for my PM... However, I want to make as close to an all grain batch as possible, using the...

    Oyster stout/Oatmeal Stout experiment

I was a little too nervous about using fermenting animal protein in something I am going to drink! Do they pasteurize anything before or after they make it?

    Oyster stout/Oatmeal Stout experiment

So I am trying to make an Oyster Stout, but most that I have tasted are quite lean in the mouth. In an attempt to rectify this, I added some Oatmeal to help with the mouthfeel. What do you think? Recipe: Oyster Oatmeal Stout (based off of Whitstable Oyster Stout Clone from Beer...

    First Partial Mash problems

Ok - this batch is cursed... broke my D$@# hydrometer as I was going to test the batch... ARRGGHHH sometimes I hate my concrete floors!! Thanks for the advice guys. I will get a bigger grain bag, use a bit more water, test after mash and test after a more vigorous shaking. Test that is after...

    First Partial Mash problems

Jedijoel - excellent idea... Not sure why I didn't think of that... I guess that I could have just mashed longer. Can I mash too long? If I still can't get the efficiency I guess I could have adjusted upwards with the extract. Definately need a bigger grain bag though.

    First Partial Mash problems

Cumin was in the recipe I had... I added the Grains of Paradise on my own... I used 1 gallon for the mash and 2.5 gallons for the sparge. Topped with about 2.75 - 3 gallons after the boil.

    First Partial Mash problems

First time using secondary and too much head space..

thanks for the advice. I am hoping that there actually was enough dissolved CO2 in there, because I made very sure that my primary was finished (SG readings that were constant 1.009 3 days in a row) before making the transfer, and there has been no fermentation "takeoff" so far.

First time using secondary and too much head space..

I am using a secondary vessel for racking for the first time, and my volume is about 3/4 to 1/2 gallon too low...I racked from a 6.4 g to a 5 g and I guess I was never at the correct amount in the primary vessel. Am I screwed? Is this too much headspace for a 2 week rest? I did spray the...

    Odorless Brewing

I personally like the smell too... It's more of my wife saying "This is why I said Lofts are NOT meant for BEER BREWING..."..and the fact that I am doing it in a closet with all of our jackets, which now have a lovely hops/sulfur aroma;) I figured this out after I heard her say "no more"...
