Has anyone modded bathroom scales to gauge beer left in kegs?

In answer to the original question, no, but I have wondered about it. I had to fix our bathroom scale once and am waiting for it to break again so I can have the excuse to get a new one and have the old one to play with as a keg gauge. I was thinking about using a small inner tube hooked to a...

    Carboy Ice Water Jacket

There was a great post here somewhere I can't find right now that described a water bath system controlled by a thermostat using a bucket of ice water as a cold source. I did this once too. The idea is basically the same as the jacket but you pump ice water in and out of a tub of water or some...

    Carboy Ice Water Jacket

I did run an experiment. I was able to cool 5 gallons of water to 50 degrees with six wraps of vinyl tubing, a pump controlled by a house thermostat, a lot of ice water and time, and a down comforter. The thermal conductivity of vinyl hose to glass to beer is not very good and the contraption...

Son of a Fermentation Chiller Hack - advice needed

The STC1000 is a better option than using a home thermostat like in your picture for several reasons. The most important is that the relay in the thermostat is small and intended to carry enough current to switch a bigger relay like would need for a refrig. I made a temperature controller with a...

    Mistakes. Read one, leave one.

I bottled a few from a near empty keg using the "We no need no shinking beer gun" method. (https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f35/we-no-need-no-stinking-beer-gun-24678/ ). I was still learning how to gently let pressure out of the bottle (while using too much pressure in the keg) so I created a few...

    Gambrinus Honey Malt

Gambrinus Malting is actually a Canadian company. Perhaps there are friendlier shipping (or exporting) agreements with a Canadian supplier.

    keg ultrasonic liquid level sensor.

I fixed the radiator in my car after taking a rock hit about 15 years ago. It was a small hole but it made me a believer. I presume the hole you are making is just big enough for two or three wires to pass through. I tried to use an IR thermometer to measure water and it more or less saw right...

    keg ultrasonic liquid level sensor.

JB weld will seal the hole up well enough to hold pressure. You will want to pot your circuit to make it submersible and may want to worry about doing it in a food safe way. There are food safe adhesives and sealants available. Interesting idea.

Harnessing the max oil potential in leaf dryhops

Toasting leaf hops really wakes them up. I presume the oils get hot and burst from their little cocoons. The volatiles definitely do go all through the house if you toast very long. I used this technique with my last batch using last years crop and the hoppiness was great. The punch in the nose...

Harnessing the max oil potential in leaf dryhops

Put the leaf hops on a cookie sheet and toast them at 300 for a few minutes.

Need help with a power supply for this pump..

It is quit okay to use a 12V 2A (2 Amp) supply. In fact it is better to have extra current available rather than use a 1.2 Amp supply since the bigger 2A supply will run cooler and arguably be more reliable.

    Bottles to avoid. Proffered bottles?

Look at the bottle. There are two rings in the glass. One at the top that the cap is crimped over, and one below it that a wing capper uses to pull the bell down onto cap to crimp it. I found out the hard way that the top ring on Negro Modelo bottles are too fat. I had some good looking bottles...

Dry hopping with home gorwn hops

Just toss em in! When you get a vacuum sealer you will most likely want to get Oxygen barrier bags as well. I have dry hopped a few things in our freezer, (ice cream bars, almonds I put in granola, cake, breaded fish and chicken...).

    Worst salvage bottles?

Great Divide Brewery uses labels that look like porous paper but are in fact rather hearty and glued on with JB weld. Negro Modelo bottles have too fat a ring on the rim so my caps wouldn't grip. Found that on out mid bottling session with not enough other bottles sanitized. Many european beers...

    Dry Hopping Ice Cream Sandwiches

I harvested 2 pounds of hops this fall and after drying them I packed them in plastic freezer bags and put them in the freezer. A short while later a box of ice cream sandwiches went into the same freezer. After a week or two we pulled out the ice cream sandwiches and they had taken on the smell...
