    A question about mashing

Alright. Cool. I am not alone in this then! Thanks for the input. I seem to always overshoot the strike water temp, so I will keep a pot of cool water on hand at the ready from now on. One last thing, and this is just a point of curiosity, how long do you think it could sit before it would be...

    A question about mashing

I brewed up my first lager earlier this summer and it is now, finally, ready for drinking. I was a bit disappointed to find that is a bit sweeter than I would like, or would expect, for a lager. Being my first lager, there were a couple of mis-steps along the way, but the one thing that...

Sow me your pump/plate chiller stand

That is a great idea! I have a platform I threw together out of some scrap wood and I am not all that happy with it. It works, but takes up way too much room for storage. Can you show me the bottom of this little beauty? I want to know how you mounted the pump and chiller to the PVC.

    American Lager Lakeside Lager

Racked this to secondary last night. Took a gravity reading tonight...and a little sample. Holy crows! This is a good beer...and it is still cooking!

    My corny spunding valve build

Absolutely. I believe that the sanke path is surest. Trying this in 5gal Corny kegs is sort of deviant. WortMonger has a monster thread running on the process, but rather than make you read through that (It was around 70 pages long when I read it last year), here is a link to the wiki page...

    My corny spunding valve build

Thanks for the info. I think I have a bum Corny for doing pressurized ferments in. It doesn't seem to seal properly. That one may be sold back to my LHBS.

    Primary fermentation in corny keg

I would think not. It probably wouldn't hurt to lay a blanket of CO2 on top of the wort, but if your yeast get to work in a hurry, I wouldn't think it would be all that necessary.

    My corny spunding valve build

CS223, I have my first pressurized ferment going (I think), but I am not seeing any pressure reading on the gauge. I am using a two-keg setup with a quart of boiled water in the bottom of the "blow-off" keg. I removed the poppet from the "in" post on the fermenting keg and the "out" post of...

    Primary fermentation in corny keg

I have my first pressurized fermentation under way! Can't wait to get home tonight to see if there is actually any pressure building in there.

    CO2 Charger for Racking?

Thanks for the input, folks. I was hoping that you could just squeeze a bit of gas at a time from the charger and this seems to be the case. If worse comes to worst, I will grab the CO2 tank and regulator.

    CO2 Charger for Racking?

I have a week to go until my first lager is ready to be racked to the secondary, so I have some time to play around with figuring out how this racking is going to take place. The lager is sitting in the bottom of a chest freezer in my basement. My 5# CO2 tank is hooked up on the inside of my...

    American Lager Lakeside Lager

It took until Thursday evening (brewed and pitched Saturday) when I came home and saw that there still was no activity taking place. I drove out to a different HBS and picked up two packs of S-23 and a wine thief to test the gravity. 1.051. I am going to go with fermentation never started. But...

    American Lager Lakeside Lager

I am fairly certain my LHBS gave me some bad advice on this one. When I asked for the two packs of S23, he talked me into a single vial of WLP800 and said I could just pitch that without a starter. This is my first attempt at lager, so I didn't really know about the huge starters that are...

    My corny spunding valve build

OK. I just tsped my plugs and it doesn't seem like there are any leaks. Let me ask you this. Cranked all the way counter-clockwise gives me shut-off? So, dialling it clockwise is opening the spund and allowing pressure to escape? Do I have that right? Just making sure I have the logic right...

    My corny spunding valve build

CS223, I finally gathered all my parts and assembled my spunding valve. I then pressurized a corny and attached the valve. I heard and felt CO2 escaping from the socket head plugs. What the heck sized Allen key do you need on these things? I'm fairly certain that my ancient set is standard, not...

    My corny spunding valve build

I JUST sent an email to my LHBS asking if if he could locate a quarter barrel or a larger Corny for me! I absolutely agree with you that the size is severely limiting. My last batch lost a bunch out the blow-off (still building the spud) tube. I boil with Fermcap-S, but I haven't added any...

    My corny spunding valve build

My valve arrived last night, now I am making a list (and checking it twice) of the other pieces to get this project finished up. I'd like to source my gauge locally from one of the big boxes or even my Mom & Pop Hardware. Is there anything special I should ask for in this gauge? Just a 30psi...

    Primary fermentation in corny keg

Second batch in a Corny is underway. I did not have a great seal around the lid, so I lost a bit there (only a very little actually), but once that was fixed up, the blow-off tube started filling with krausen. Good thing I remembered to put the StarSan growler in an overflow bucket! Now if I...

    Primary fermentation in corny keg

CS223, thanks for that! Exactly what I was after.

    Primary fermentation in corny keg

Do any of you have a part or parts number for a spunding valve and the etc to connect to a corny? Brewing season is about to commence for me and I am still hot to try this technique out.
