How would you determine the alcohol content of cold-made batch of applejack? Hydrometer?

I agree with the general sentiment -- it is nice in theory, but in practice your cider just ends up tasting funky and "chemical-ish". I love sweet cider, but I actually prefer the "dry" stuff to the "Splenda" kind.

Money is tight. I am bottling some homebrew and recycling some old beer bottles. Does anyone know any good tricks for help getting the old labels (and more specifically the glue) off? Thanks in advance.
