How I ended up mopping my ceiling...

I haven't posted on here in forever, but I have still been brewing. I ran across these pictures recently and I thought this would be a good, humorous re-introduction post! Thanks for all the good info on the forum and Happy Holidays to all! More pictures and the story are here...

    basement for brewing?

I'm also setup for all grain in my basement. Propane burners with overhead vent + fan, 2 fans circulating air, all setup near the open door and a CO monitor next to the brew stand. Durring testing I never went above 23ppm CO even with the fans off. However, I'm constantly worried about it. I...

    Pump question

I don't recirculate (yet) but I use a pump for chilling and transfer out of my boil kettle. My pump inlet is about 4" below the outlet of my brew kettle. I'm using a little giant pump, no problems so far but I'm only on batch 8 with my new setup.

    Scratch in Keggle

I'll second what was already said - A good scrub with some Bar Keepers Friend (BKF) will go a long way to help re-passivate the stainless. I had some issues with excessive heat due to welding on one kettle, did the BKF treatment a few times and bam, no more rust issues to stay on top of. And...

    Jaybird's Stainless False Bottoms

Recieved mine this week - The false bottom fits great, thanks for also taking the time to answer all my questions. Can't wait to brew with it! I'll try to remember to snap a few pictures!

Potable water hose & weird smell/taste?

Brewed Saturday with the potable water hose - No detectable smells or tastes.

    Any brew-software for Android?

I also like the brewzor app, very useful tool. But I also use the homebrew calculator app, specifically for it's SRM calculator, bitterness calculator and boil timer.

    Weldless kits from Bargain Fittings?

I'm also a happy BF customer, about to place another order actually :mug: I'm sure others will also have advice, but here's what's helped me make clean holes and keep my step bit sharp: -Drill a smallish pilot hole first, I think I used a 3/16" bit for my pilot hole last time. -Use some...

Potable water hose & weird smell/taste?

Yep, wally world. Potable water RV hose. That is pretty much my plan too. It seems fine now, not sure what the deal was. I'm going to do a bit more water taste testing before I brew with it this weekend. I'll update this thread with the highly scientific results from my olfactory spectrometer.

Potable water hose & weird smell/taste?

Thanks for the input guys. So, while cleaning up a little bit last night I let the hose soak in a mild oxy-clean and warm water solution for about 20 min and then ran hot and cold water through the hose for about 5 minutes. The weird plasticy taste/smell seems to be gone. -Couldn't return...

Potable water hose & weird smell/taste?

Yesterday, while filling my hot liquor tank I noticed a rubber/plastic "New hose smell" coming from my water. I narrowed it down to the potable water hose I picked up recently. How do I get rid of this taste and smell that's coming from the hose? My first thoughts: 1. Run a crapload of water...

2010 Bigfoot is on the loose!

Got my 6 pack last week. I've had 2 so far, great beer! But even better aged a bit, I think I'm going to have to grab another 6er to store in the basement...

    So who's brewing this weekend?

I'll be brewing an amber on Sunday. This will be my first brew with my new pump, I'm looking forward to not lifting kegs of boiling wort anymore!

    Beer Styles that Cellar/Age well

Tough call. I really like tasting how the beer changes over time, maybe brew one batch with and one without and see how they stack up against each other in 6mo-1yr?

    Beer Styles that Cellar/Age well

Imperial stout's age well. I have one I brewed that is a little over 3 years old, so far it just keeps getting better with age. One surprising thing is how much the hops mellowed, I went crazy with the hops (100+ ibu's) but you can barely taste them now.

    Improving propane burner

You could also shroud your burner. Might help a bit, and if you brew outside you'll have a more stable flame. You could also upgrade your burner and/or regulator, here's an idea of what's avalible: http://bayouclassicdepot.com/propane_cast_iron_burner.htm

What do you do with your beer?

Trade/barter. I also give away bottles to neighbors and friends - In related news, the neighbors and landlord no longer think I'm cooking meth in the basement
