To finish boil or not ?

You'll find out in a five weeks! :) I bet it will be fine.

    Extermely low efficiency/gravity

What recipe did you use? Only using 10lbs of base malt with no specialty grains (or wheat) seems quite odd. Most Hefe's are 50% malt/wheat.

Help me before I break my malt mill

Yep, the passive roller turns freely if I manually turn it. I've disassembled, cleaned, lubricated and reassembled. No love. It has to be the old-school linear knurl on the rollers. This mill is one of the first JSP manufactured based on my research.

How was your crush? It should look like this: http://www.lootcorp.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/crushed-grain.jpg I screwed my first crush up and only hit 50% efficiency. Your process sounds about right to me.

Help me before I break my malt mill

Interesting: http://www.brewboard.com/index.php?showtopic=113612 This is the exact MM I have -- it appears to be one of the first JSP manufactured! The end plates appear to be cast with raised initials, and the rollers have a linear knurl (not diamond). Looks like Jack will reknurl for a...

Help me before I break my malt mill

Perhaps the issue is that I have the "old style" knurled rollers? http://www.craftkb.com/Uwe/Forum.aspx/brewing/6969/JSP-MaltMill-O-Ring My rollers have long, unbroken grooves from end to end. Others I've seen have a diamond plate type groove system.

Help me before I break my malt mill

Perhaps something is wrong with my mill. I know that I'm not alone as I've seen several other people with the same issue in various message boards. The driven roller spins, the grain rolls, and the passive roller doesn't flinch. I have a 0.05" gap (checked with a feeler gauge). I've cleaned...

Help me before I break my malt mill

Gave that a whirl with not much luck. I emailed Jack of JSP and hopefully he has some ideas.

Help me before I break my malt mill

I bought a non-adjustable JSP malt mill off of eBay awhile back. The first thing I noticed was that both rollers have a gasket around them. It doesn't change the (0.05) spacing, and I assume it's only to engage the passive roller. I've mechanized the mill with a 10A drill which powers it nicely...

    What did I do wrong?

You're right. I remember reading that somewhere before but it got lost in the shuffle. Thanks for the reminder.

    What did I do wrong?

Yep, I was screwed from the get go :) Ran my numbers through the formula and it seems that I did get horrible efficiency. 35% sucks. Thanks for your help guys, my second AG batch will be much better thanks to you.

    What did I do wrong?

It's a 5G batch. The OG I gave was taken at 140 degrees, but then corrected as per BrewPal's hydrometer calculator. It does seem to be the crush/efficiency that was wrong (as the strike/sparge process you listed is in fact what I did). The yeast strain is WLP300.

    What did I do wrong?

Wow, I guess I was way off on the crush! I had to crush the wheat three times to get it even to that level, and even then it looked like the wheat was cracked in half or in quarter or so. Is that normal / preferred?

    What did I do wrong?

Unfortunately, that seems right now that you say that. What do you guys think I did wrong with the mash? Too cold? Grains not fully crushed?

    What did I do wrong?

I crushed the grain at home with a malt mill, I've crushed like this before in a previous batch with no issues. I mashed for 60 minutes at 147 degrees. My strike was 3.8G and the sparge was 4.2G. I used wheat malt. I have some photos of the crushed grain/carboy here if interested...

    What did I do wrong?

Hello all; this is my first post... This batch of Hefeweizen was my first AG brew. I think I may have done something wrong, but can't figure it out and hope someone can give me a pointer. I brewed last Saturday. It was 5lb 2-row base, 5lb wheat, 1.5oz of Hallertau hops and WLP300 strain of...
