    Buying grains in bulk

Also, don't forget about buying hops in bulk. Believe it or not, but you can also make IPAs very cheaply. Keep in contact with your LHBS (get on their email list) as mine always has certain sales depending on their stock (e.g., I recently bought 50 lbs of white wheat for $32 as they had too much...

    Temp sensor placement

I have mine duct taped to outside of the carboy insulated by a thin layer of packing foam. I set mine +/- 1 degree and it doesn't cycle on or off very often. If you find your cycling often, then it's being exposed to too much open air. It takes quite a bit to change the temp of 5 gallons, so you...

How do you clean a stove after boil over?

HOT water and a sponge. That's all you need. What you have with a boil over is a melted sugar solution. It's like trying to cleanup dried maple syrup.

best way to clean crud out of 6.5 gal glass carboy

Yes, it will take off all the dried crud with no problem. I use less than their recommended usage rate as I think I experimented with something like 2 tbs/6 gal carboy and it works great. I'd probably use hot, but not scalding water. Buy in bulk to save $$... I use this stuff for my beer lines...

best way to clean crud out of 6.5 gal glass carboy

PBW and warm water. Let it sit overnight. Rinse and shake. This stuff is great. No scrubbing and no fuss.

Now accepting ideas for my my second brew.

I'd agree with the American Pale Ale suggestion, since you said you wanted it hoppy. I'd keep the ABV relatively low, around 5% (IMO it will be ready sooner and you'll run into less fermentation problems). I'd also brew a similar recipe for the next half dozen or so batches and just make minor...

Low Hydrometer Reading: What did I do wrong?

Assuming this isn't a joke post, check your hydrometer for a crack/leak. This is exactly what happened to me on my first batch. Everything was fine, but the hydro sunk to the bottom of the tube. The crack was so slight it was difficult to detect, but I knew something was terribly wrong...

    What are you drinking now?

Sierra Nevada Torpedo Extra IPA. The alcohol presence is definitely noticeable at 7.2%. It's a good quality IPA you would expect from SN, but overall it's nothing to write home about. A little boring...

    Ooops!!!

Great. If this beer comes out good you'll be on here touting your new "spring water bottle technique!" "Yeah, it helps out fermentation by creating more surface area for the yeast to propogate, similar to AB's use of beachwood aging ..." :p

    Temperature Control

I'm pretty handy, but lazy, so I scored a chest freezer of CL and use this with a dual Ranco controller with a William's fermentation heat pad (adheres to the side wall = ZERO space taken up by pad!) . Controlling the fermentation temps was the single best thing that improved not only the...
