    sanitizing my glass carboy?

It's probably the cheapest aspect of my brew day too, I'm sure if you were to itemize the list of costs that go into a brew: energy, fuel, water, raw ingredients, iodophor or starsan will be the cheapest, unless you use tap water.

    sanitizing my glass carboy?

+1 for Starsan I made up one gallon of starsan about 6 months ago and put it in a heavy duty spray bottle I got from walmart for a few bucks. Mist down your wort touching equipment a few minutes before contact. Spray liberally into the carboy or whatever fermenter and rotate so that the star...

Major Noob Question: Does all the wort have to be boiled?

I've run into this problem as well.... I have a 30qt boil pot that really only wants to boil 24 lest there are any boilovers. My solution? I've collected another gallon or so in a separate pot and boiled for ~15 minutes prior to adding it to the main pot, which had 15 minutes left of boil...

Use to be able to get a mixed drink called "diesel fuel" down there at one of the Pensacola bars on the beach..... You can probably get a "light, sweet crude" for pretty cheap now.....

    Thinning wort to correct OG

Math is the language of science, and... er... mathematicians. I actually like this technique because I can get fairly accurate volumes from my carboys, and the difference between V2 and V1 would be the volume I would need to add to bring my OG into range, which I can measure quite...

    Thinning wort to correct OG

:drunk: So lately my efficiencies and gravities have been fairly off from my target. That there is a whole 'nother topic, but.... Let's say I collect a sample for the hydro at flameout and stick it in the freezer, and proceed with my chilling and stirring and what not before I pitch the...

The difference between caramel and crystal malts

So I've been trying to find a definite answer on this. My current understanding is that caramel and crystal are basically the same... only certain regions of europe refer to this type of malt as caramel, and the british call it crystal. In essence though, they are basically the same. I...

Advice on IPA and dead guy clone

Whats up HBTers. I've got a dilemma that I need to run by you........ I've a got a dead guy clone (Yooper's extract recipe) in the fermenter right now. After the boil, I transfered the boiling wort to my fermenter and then tried to use ice cubes to cool it down. I ran out of ice cubes, so I...

Welcome.... Oh, wait, that's your line

First off, let me say :mug: I've been lurking ever since I pitched the yeast on my first brew. I got a cooper's homebrew kit from my dad for Christmas last month, and, besides the guitar, I haven't been as passionate or excited about a hobby since. My join date is fitting, because today I...
