    Hops won't sprout up!

I live in NY State and bought some cascades last year. They did fine although I didn't get any hops. They are in a relatively small 15 inch pot. I've been watering them using Miracle Grow and they still haven't sprouted. I left them outside in the pot all winter? Should I give up and buy...

Went to the LHBS to pick up to pick up a smack pack of 1099 Whitbread yeast. Packaged on date was 01/10/2011!!! Doesn't get any better then that :ban:

    Step mashing and pilsner malts

I'm going to be brewing a DFH 90 minute IPA recipe which calls for about 16.5 lbs on pilsner malt. Based on what I've read it's best to use a step mash when using pilsner malt, however my equipment is only setup for doing infusions. I only have a turkey fryer and can't accommodate boiling down...

    Competition brewday

I was planning on entering this into a competition and I think I nailed it. It was one of the most flawless brewdays I've ever had. This is an award winning recipe from Jamil Z and I can't wait to taste in six weeks and hopefully do well in competition. Let me know what you guys think of the...

    Beer Shenanigans

Father in law came over to visit the house and go to a college basketball game. We both had three DFH 60 Minute IPA homebrew clones which he enjoyed thoroughly (wants me to brew up a batch for him). We then left for the game and had a couple Saranac IPA'a and a Black Forest and at that point we...

    Dry Hopping Question

Made a Dogfish head 60 Minute IPA that's been sitting in primary for four months. The recipe calls for dry hopping. Most of the time when dry hopping, hops are added about two weeks into fermentation. Would it still be ok to dry hop at this point or should I just bottle it up.

NEW Hair of the Dog IPA Label!

Check out the new label I made using Inkscape. I tried to post a few days ago and couldn't seem to get it to work out. Regardless, let me know what you think!

    Feedback on new label

I just used Inkscape for the first time and came up with this for a label. I had to take a screenshot and paste it into paint to save as a JPEG to upload onto this sight and that's why it's not so clear. The original is more crisp and I wasn't sure how to get it on here. Let me know what you...

    AG Disaster - Advice needed!

I am in terrible need of help. I've brewed three AG recipes, I hit the OG spot on during the first recipe and I've missed by .020 on the last two recipes. I was trying to brew the DFH 60 min IPA clone. The recipe is as follows: 13 LB US 2 Row 6 Oz Amber Malt .75 oz Warrior Hops added...

    Simple efficiency revelation

My apologies if this is something totally obvious as I am new to All Grain brewing but after listening to a mash efficiency BrewStrong Podcast I thought of something. I've only done a couple of All Grain batches but they mentioned that efficiency is impacted significantly by the amount of...

    Mash Tun Washer

I'm building a mash tun and I'm trying to find a washer for the inside of the cooler where the adapter meets the nipple. I'm looking for a 3/4 inch SS or brass washer and I'm having trouble finding anything. I've tried Home Depot and a couple local hardware stores. Does anyone have any...

    Critique my brew day!

I was hoping a few of the more experienced people on here might be able to give me a few pointers on how to improve the quality of my beer. I listen to podcasts, spend time trolling this form and have read John Palmers book and I think I have my procedure down pretty good but if anyone wants to...

Culturing yeast from a commercial bottle

I'm going to be making Orfy's Old Speckled Hen recipe next weekend and I wanted to try to use the same yeast that they use at the brewery. As an experiment I went out and got a bottle conditioned Hen's Tooth from a local beverage center on Wednesday for a trial run culturing the yeast. It...

    Almost coughed in beer

Took the top off of by bucket to rack the beer into the bottling bucket last night. I wasn't thinking and wanted to take a big ole whiff of the beer before I racked it over into the bottling bucket. Took a huge breath of CO2 off the top of the beer and almost died. Note to self: Do not enhale...

    Am I being paranoid?

I'm always thinking of what I can do better and I keep retracing the steps from my last batch. The fermenter had the smell of cascade hops from my previous batch even after I sanitized with Iodophor for one hour. This is only the second batch I've done in this ale pale. I'm hoping this won't...

    Lemon Zest Addition

I tried to use the search feature but I couldn't find anything that directly answered my question. I brewed a summer ale last Sunday which is currently sitting in primary. I wanted to add lemon zest to the primary about a week before i bottle but i wasn't sure if this was a good idea. How do I...

Something with this recipe doesn't seem right..

I picked up a grain/extract kit at my LHBS yesterday but after reading the directions, something doesn't seem right. It's a "Summerbrau" recipe ( a clone of Sam Summer Ale ). The ingriedients are as follows: 3 lbs DME Gold 1/2 lb Lager Malt Grain 1 lb Carapils Malt Grain 1 lb Vienna Malt...

    Bottling Procedural Question

In the past I've always used Mr. Beer kits. I've always measured the sugar out and added to the bottle as per the instructions contained in the Mr. Beer kit. I purchased a new 5g kit which is much nicer than Mr. Beer and the rep at my LHBS said that all I would need to do is dissolve the sugar...

    Labeling adhesive

I'm new to the hobby and I'm going to put some fancy labels on my first brew. Based on what I've read I can use milk as an adhesive. My question is this. I was going to use regular paper to print the labels. My concern is that when I use milk the ink on the labels will run. What is the...

    Hydromenter Help!

Ok, so i put a batch into the primary and this is my first batch that is not a Mr. Beer recipe. It's a Stella Artois Clone and the OG for the batch was 1.042 which looks to be right on target, so far so good. My question is when do I take the next reading with the hydrometer? Do I leave the...
