American Strong Ale Tropical American Strong Ale

I brewed this 2.5 weeks ago, and kegged and force carbonated it tonight. I'm very happy with how it turned out. It should get better conditioning in the next 2 weeks. I hope that there is some left by then. If this were lighter and cloudy, it could be a NEIPA If you have any recommendations...

    Questions About Immersion Chillers

I decided to move to an immersion chiller rather than putting my kettle in an ice bath. I purchased a copper immersion chiller, made with 50 feet of 3/8 copper tubing. It has garden hose fittings that are soldered on the tubing. I know I need to immerse this with about 15 minutes left in...

Old Stone House Northern English Brown Ale

I really love making beer. I never would have bought this style beer before I became a home brewer! This beer turned out nicely. Mild, malty, and toasty - I love this stuff. I will definitely have a beer night with my friends to showcase this. I used Orfy's Mild-Mannered Ale as a...

I Love the Smell of Yeast in the Morning - It Smells Like Victory!

My basement smell freaking wonderful with my latest brew fermenting like gangbusters!!! I just want to sit in the basement and dream of the finished beer. Brewed it yesterday. I made my version of an American Amber Ale. I like my amber a bit on the malty side so I use White Labs 005 -...

    Possible Oxidation Issue in Secondary!!!

Hopefully I don't have a problem. Here's the poop. Sunday morning I was still having some bubbling in my airlock, about every 5 minutes. I wanted to put this in a secondary. Unfortunately I splashed just a little bit when racking. I checked the gravity; it was 1.010. That is the estimate...

Had a Very Good Brew Day Today

Man, I had a good day! One of my friends came over for a brew session. He brought some Belgian and Scottish big beers, some Maui Honey Blonde and a couple of other ales. I provided my Belgian Tripel and my APA (both extract) and my all-grain APA. In addition we had a bottle of my homemade...

I want to make my first yeast starter for brewing this weekend... Opinions please

I'm brewing a Northern English Brown Ale Saturday, and I want to try a starter. However, I have no stir plate and only a 22 oz bottle. The guy at my LHBS suggested using the 22 oz bottle with a number 2 stopper and an air lock. I will use Bedford British Ale (White Labs #WLP006). My...

I need the water analysis for Prince William County in Northern Virginia

Anyone out there in Northern Virginia have a water analysis for the Manassas area? The Prince William County Service Authority website has nothing. I want to make a Northern English Brown Ale, and I need to know what water adjustments to make.

Did I Ruin My Beverage Cooler MLT?

Today, I was a dumb ass. I swapped out the zinc/steel washer with a stainless washer tonight. Then I put a quart of vineager and several gallons of hot water in it to take any lead off of the surface of the brass part. Here is the dumb thing, I used boiling water. The liner of the cooler...

    More thoughts on trying all-grain..

I've made my MLT, and am basically ready to give all-grain a try. I am a "process" guy and always want to learn more. That is one of the big reasons to try it out. I've made a few extract beers, and they have all been pretty good. Apparently I have that process and sanitation nailed...

My Fortune for One 5/8" Stainless Steel Fender Washer!

I've built my 10 gallon, Rubbermaid MLT; and I'm ready to start my 1st AG brew. However, I used a steel (coated) fender washer on the inside since I could not find a stainless steel (SS) one. Would I jeopardize my wort if I use the steel washer? I don't want to taint the wort. I have been...

This was a big deal. For the 1st time, I let someone else try my beer. The had both my Belgian Tripel and Old Stone House Pale Ale. They loved them both! It sure feels good. I need to brew more.... went through a case today.

Anyone Use Kieselsol and Chitosan to Clarify?

I use this when clarifying my wine: Kieselsol and Chitosan I have seen these for sale for beer at several websites. Has anyone used these for clarifying their beer in the secondary? If so, was there still sufficient yeast for bottle conditioning? These are very easy to use, no heating like...

    What Are Amarillo's Characteristics?

My last recipe made called for Amarillo for bittering. In your experience, what are the bittering, flavoring and aromatic characteristics of this hop. I did like the aroma of the hops right out of the package. I'm thinking this would go well with Cascade. Any thoughts about Amarillo?
