Kettle Hops: Bagged vs. Loose | exBEERiment Results!

I do something similar. I put a 5 gallon paint strainer in my bottling bucket. Clip the top of the bag to the top of the bottling bucket using binder clips. I siphon directly into the paint strainer, and situate my fermenting bucket under the bottling bucket with the spigot open. I'm sure it...

    Todd's Muscadine Wine

I found this old thread, and I'm using this recipe to make some muscadine wine. Since this is my first wine I'm checking to make sure I understand. Why am I pulling off the yeast cake before I'm adding sugar water? Why not add that before the first fermentation? Seems like it would be impossible...

Inkbird itc-308? $35 gets you wired, 2 stage temp controller.

Same here. I took the probe from a Fisher Scientific digital thermometer that shows the current temp plus the high and low temp and taped to the probe of the ITC. It's staying within a degree of the Fisher thermometer (which measures to the tenth) and it is holding it within about 5 degrees of...

    Growing hops in Mississippi.

Mine popped up and stalled. They aren't in the best location. I think it's a combo of too much shade, and the cool nights we've had. I plan on moving them eventually, just too much going on this year to mess with it.

My cascades are starting to peep through. Hope I get something out of them this year (year 2).

    clean, crisp, clear beer

The hefe has a low flocculent yeast. It is supposed to be hazy. The wheat is supposed to be hazy as well. The IPA could be hazy from the dry hopping. The only one I see you've brewed that I would be concerned with is the lager (XX). Like everyone else has said the longer at fridge temps the...

    poppet making beer flat?

Okay swapped popetts and dip tube with a spare keg. Didn't help. I got no other ideas... only thing that went wrong with this beer is my thermostat failed while I was out of town and froze the beer, but I don't see how that could change anything. I let it thaw completely and recarbed it. Could...

    poppet making beer flat?

I wondered the same thing. I have a 2 year old and a 4 year old, so I don't get much time to worry about my kegs. I got a spark plug socket out of my tool box to make a post socket from, but it wasn't big enough. Maybe I'll have time to try some other stuff this weekend. Maybe I'll clean my...

    poppet making beer flat?

No both are open. Plus the beer inside is carbonated.

    poppet making beer flat?

No bubbles. It's flat. You can feel a very very slight carbonation. I'd say equivalent to putting the keg on 5 or 6 psi. But when I dipped some out of the keg it had nice carbonation. Also both kegs are hooked to the same regulator. It's really weird. This beer has been lagering for around 6...

    poppet making beer flat?

Okay. Need advice. I have a beer that I know is carbed, and I know is not overcarbed, but it's coming out flat. No head, just flat. I have two kegs currently in my keezer attached to the same gas line at ~12 psi. My black IPA is carbed perfectly, my maibock is coming out flat. Been...

    Growing hops in Mississippi.

Nah, no burs. I read somewhere that in the south it is best for you to put the hops in a spot that gets some shade in the afternoon because of the heat, but I think I'm going to move it to a spot with more sunlight for next year if I can find one.

    Growing hops in Mississippi.

I don't think I am going to get any cones this year (first year). My Cascade which is doing the best of the three is around 15', and has a few side arms of 3-4". I have a feeling it is too little too late though. I'm sure they will take off like crazy next year though.

    Beer in Jackson?

Not much. The Bulldog is probably the best bar around Jackson. Someone is opening a pub in Jackson, but it isn't opened yet. If you are ever in Hattiesburg (1.5 hours south) they have a couple good places to visit. Keg and Barrel being one.

    Mississippi Roll Call

First year hops still going strong. The cascade on the right is just over 10'. But only had 2 bines. The nugget on the left has several bines but is much shorter, and the Columbus in the middle isn't doing much of anything. I read somewhere that in the south it's better to have a lot of shade...

    Growing hops in Mississippi.

Just found this thread. I got a few rhizomes in the ground this year in Brandon. For first year rhizomes and someone who has never tried gardening I think they are doing okay. I'll try to remember to snap some pictures next time I get a chance. My tallest is my Nugget plant which is about 4'...
