I would think that if the wort doesn't short the element than your cooler wouldn't either but I would be worried about the cooler getting a hole burned into it from the concentrated heat. If it was me I would err on the side of caution and figure something else out. Just my two cents though.

Maybe buy/find/borrow/hire a tap and tap it all the way through from the inside so you don't have to worry about the threads lining up. when I need to know SG for fruit or honey additions I use the mead calculator at gotmead.com. I've used it around six times and so far the information has been very accurate. It can be a little tricky to use but once you figure it out its pretty handy for things like this.
