Can a keg be too big?

Thanks everyone. Yes, I looked at getting a 'corny' setup, but then I saw the price. As another friend of mine saws. "Free's a pretty good price. You can't beat free." He's basically going to lend/give me eveything I need to keg and serve beer. An offer I would struggle to turn down. Even if...

Can a keg be too big?

Hi all. A friend of mine has a couple of old Sanke 7.75 gallon "Pony kegs" he is willing to give me. I was wondering if it's a problem to only put 5 gallons of beer in, or if I need to make bigger batches to fill them up. If anyone has any knowledge about this, I'd be very grateful. :)

Making a 3 gal wort and topping with 2 gal boiled water; difference in taste?

I'm led to believe that boiling the whole wort is better, but you can definitely brew fine with a smaller wort. My first brew was from a kit that had me make 1-1.5 gallons of wort and then add enough water to that to bring it up to 5 gallons. I haven't had a chance to taste it yet but it...

When to take the final potential alcohol reading?

Ah, ok. More good answers. That makes sense. I've just set off my second kit, so I'm pretty must just following the instructions. I guess they're setup, so that more than enough time is left for the fermenting, hence they only seem to mention the SG readings in passing. My next beer might be...

When to take the final potential alcohol reading?

Fantastic, thanks RichBrewer. I had a feeling that was probably it, but I failed Physics at school because I always came to the wrong deductions, so I like to check with someone else now. =)

When to take the final potential alcohol reading?

Hi everyone, I know I need to subtract the final potential alcohol from the original, but when do I take the final reading. This is probably a really dumb question, which would explain why I can't find the answer anywhere. My kit says to take the second SG reading when I put the beer into...

    Non-stick pot question

Fantastic, this thread just saved me the $30-40 I thought I was going to have to spend on a stainless steel pot. Woo!! Thanks HBT!! My second batch of beer can now be started (as soon as I have enough empty bottles for it).

    How did you find us?

Googling to find out if I can use a standard 2 gallon teflon lined cooking pot I have to make wort I found this site. It looks good so I signed up. I still haven't found the answer to my question though =S
