Why is there such a huge leak in my regulator?

This is my first time kegging so I suspect there's an obvious solution. I went to use a spare keg to put the co2 in just so I had a little trial before actually carbonating my beer. the problem is there is a massive leak right where I connect the regulator to the co2 tank (At the nut you twist...

    Trub in my airlock?

I went downstairs to get another bucket to make some more brew and somehow there is a bunch of trub in my airlock on one of my primes. Does anyone have any idea how this could have happened and what it means for the beer?

First PM attempt, missed OG by a long shot

I just finished my first partial mash attempt and it did not go well (I think). The OG is supposed to be 1.073, I got a 1.062. I was wondering if I could get some advice or suggestions, here are the big problems I think I had. 1. I used a 10g boiling pot to make a 5g batch, the problem I...

Floating Thermometer question, kind of urgent

I'm brewing my first partial mash right now and I was wondering if a floating thermometer needs to be fully submerged in the water to give an accurate reading. I have about 2.60 gallons in a 10 gallon boiling pot so its not actually floating its resting more than anything. I was thinking if it's...

    Question about Pumpkin Ale

http://www.tastybrew.com/newrcp/detail/650 I'm planning on making a recipes from the website above and towards the end it says "left bag of pumpkin mix in primary". Do they just mean move the grain bag right from the boiler to the primary? I've always been nervous about having anything I...

Lager fermentation in a wine cellar

From what I understand lagers should ferment around 45-55 F. Now I have access to a wine cellar where the temperature is kept exactly at 57. I've heard that when you ferment ales at too high of a temperature you can get a fruity banana off taste and I was wondering if the same off flavors get...

    Getting back into brewing soon

So since around February I haven't been able to brew for a number of reasons but now starting in September I'll have a place to brew and the time and money to do it. I was planning on starting to brew in the next week or two so I can have a couple batches ready for the fall, which is IMO the...

Great Idea, Regular Idea, or Terrible Idea?

Walking out of my local, largely overpriced local liquor store I had the idea for a website. The site out develop a national standard for liquor prices in the US either on a national or state level (Most likely state due to different liquor laws). People could submit liquor stores in a wiki...

    Good Available Commerical Belgians

I made a basic Belgian Ale extract kit from True Brew and it came out incredible. Now I want to start focusing in on Belgian Ales so I was wondering if anyone has list of commercial Belgians I could try to sort of sample the field, try to keep it to ones I won't have too hard of a time finding...

    Craigslist Kegging Found

Due to my schedule/personality it really isn't practical for me to keep bottling, so I need to start kegging. I want to make the switch ASAP since I'm holding off brewing until I get a set up at my house. I've been creeping on craigslist hoping for a good deal and I found this "For sale are...

    Strainer & hole size

Happy Holidays. Now that thats out of the way lets get back to business. I'm going AG asap, I'm going to build a cooler mash tun/lautering gadget and an immersions wort chiller within 1 week (Bar procrastination and excessive celebrating). Now I need a strainer. My question is about the...

    Storing clean water?

So after three batches I'm tired of spending ~$9 for clean water, especially since I'm gonna try to be brewing every 10 days after Jan 1st. I have a britta filter that holds about 3/4 gallon of water. If I fill up an empty plastic store bought gallon of water with iodophor+h20 solution then fill...

Add all your hops at once and boil 20 minutes?!

Ok, I know enough to predict that brew kit recipe instructions are terrible. But since there are still 1 or 2 thousand things I don't understand I got some questions about this one. I picked up a True Brew Oktoberfest kit to try and sneak in a batch before I take my finals. A few things in...

Too much headspace in bottled beer?

I figured that if you don't leave enough space the beer will probably explode, but are there any negative effects to leaving extra head space from worry about a bottle exploding.

    Scratches on a plastic bucket

Now from what I've read scratches on a fermenting bucket can lead to infection. I'm a little curious as to how big of a scratch we're talking about and how likely that spot could harbor bacteria to cause an infection. Right now all I use is plastic buckets, before reading about the scratches...

    Shelflife of Irish Moss

Hey I was looking at some add ins that might be helpful for brewing and irish moss looks like its worth it, clarifying beer for about 1$. I have a few questions though. 1) How do you store it and how long does it last? 2) How do you calculate how much to use (Based on malts or volume...

    Too much water in airlock?

What are some problems that can arise from having too much/not enough water in an airlock? I imagine not having enough wouldn't keep the bacteria out and could risk an infection but what about having too much, 75-90% full instead of 50-60%.

How I plan on blowing a holiday bonus check.

Alright so I've been thinking about what to do with extra cash that might float my way during the holidays and all I really feel like doing is spending it on brewing equip. So what I'm hoping for is just getting the most bang for my buck. Here's what I was thinking. 1) Fermentometer (Sp?) for...
