    Upgrading to Full Boil! Questions...

Thanks everyone - good advice from all! Based on what I am seeing, 10 gal is the best way to go. Next step is the turkey fryer or bayou classic. I'm going to do a bit more research down these routes, and let everyone know what I do. Thanks!

    Upgrading to Full Boil! Questions...

Hi gang, After several partial boil extract batches, I am planning to change over to full boil. I'd like to get some recommendations from the group... 1. I'd like to go directly to a 10 gal brewpot; my intent is to boil 7 gallons starting volume to get 6 gal - 5.5 gal in my primary...

When to go from Primary to Secondary (If at all)

Granted I am a noob myself, but I have one primary and three secondaries, the plan being, that I can get a solid rotation going of fermentation, clarification, and bottling. So, mostly logistics. That being said, I am tremendously surprised by the amount of clarity I got on my first batch of...

    A couple of quick questions.

Hey StevenR - just bottled my first brew, and like you, had some issues with brew day. The important thing though is to keep going with it, and see what happens when you are finished with bottling. For me, the most important thing was keeping a log book of everything I did, step by step...

    Fermentation/clearing

Even though I only just bottled my first beer, I had tremendous success with clarity using a long primary and secondary. A quirk of bad scheduling left me with a 2 week primary fermentation, and nearly 3 weeks in my secondary. When I bottled yesterday, the beer was crystal-clear at 68degF.

    First bottling!

I'd say my best practice thus far was the second 'fermentation' for clarity. I ended up with a very clear beer that looks great... let's just hope there are yeasties still alive for carbonation!

    First bottling!

So, no major issues here, just a brief description of how it went. So, the morning of, I ran my bottles through the dishwasher, no soap, on high-temperature water. The cycle completed, I pulled the bottles out and allowed to cool to approximately room temperature. At the same time, I...

Strange Beer Color and Pressure in Secondary

Thanks all for helping to put my mind at ease. :)

When to put extract into the boil?

Quite a bit of variation! For the record, I use a 2 gallon boil. I start off with 2.5 gallons in the pot, knowing that 0.5 gallons will boil off. I will try some of these methods next time to see what happens.

Strange Beer Color and Pressure in Secondary

.... airlock is back to normal now.... perhaps it has to deal with barometric pressure?

Strange Beer Color and Pressure in Secondary

Ack, but I have a glass carboy. *facepalm* I'd go cry in my beer if I had any! :)

When to put extract into the boil?

Hello again gang - So.... for extract brewing, when do you add your extract into the boil, in this case, a 60 minute boil? 0 minutes? 30 minutes? 55 minutes? For my first batch, I had to add 6.6 lbs of LME, so I added half at time zero, half at the end. I didn't like the syrupy-ness at...

Strange Beer Color and Pressure in Secondary

Aha.... indeed this is an extract kit. For my procedure, I had 6.6 lbs of LME, added half at the beginning, and half near the end. Interesting... perhaps the subject of a new thread... :)

    Secondary Fermentation

... I hear a lot of folks here subscribe to the 1 2 3 method: one week in primary, two weeks in secondary, 3 weeks in the bottle. I'd like to give that a try, but now I'm more like 2 weeks in primary, beginning my second week in secondary... :(

What is the best fluid to put in the airlock

I have some really old Polish Rectified Spirits. Na Zdrovia!

Journal of my first batch - please comment!

+1 to steeping grains at proper temperature: Indeed, on my first batch a few weeks, I got my water to 170, and added my steeping grains, put the kitchen burner back down to simmer. But... the temp still went up! I figured as it went to 180 and 185, no harm done.... but I haven't tasted the...

Strange Beer Color and Pressure in Secondary

Hello gang - So, I wanted to get in the habit early on of putting my beer into a secondary fermenter.... I use the term ' fermenter' loosely because, with my Fat Tire clone, I'm not adding any additional flavors or whatnot, so really this step is just for clarity. So, my Fat Tire Clone...

    bottle sanitizing

Rather than hijack this thread, I staretd a new thread about swing top sanitization and some questions with that. :mug: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f39/swing-bottle-sanitization-142744/

    Swing Bottle Sanitization?

Rather than hijack the already-robust thread on general bottle sanitization, I'd like to open up a new one for swing-cap bottle sanitization specifically. Revvy, I am stealing your quote here on the vinator ... it seems to me that, with the swing caps, there are, in addition to the bottle as...

    The eternal Gravity question...

To stale's question - primary was started on Oct 11, so this is day 10. To Pappers and Snyder - this is my deduction as well. I think I'll toss into my secondary this evening. I'm going to see if I can settled some of the extra 'stuff' out, but my guess is that this beer is going to be a...
