Priming & Rackinig : Temperature Question

I am not very experienced at brewing, but I cannot see this being a big issue. Assuming you are doing a 5 gallon batch, you are putting a small amount of warm priming solution into a much larger amount of cool beer. The priming solution should cool down pretty quickly once you add it to your beer.

Amber Ale - Cloudy After 3 Weeks

So maybe I don't rack to secondary at all? Maybe I just let it sit in primary for a few more weeks and let the yeast clean up after themselves?

Amber Ale - Cloudy After 3 Weeks

Great. Thanks for the input. I was afraid that if I left it sit for another couple of weeks that I would have a problem when bottling (i.e. maybe need to repitch new yeast for it to carbonate). Typical noob worry. It doesn't sound like that is the case, so I can certainly be patient. I...

Amber Ale - Cloudy After 3 Weeks

Hi All, I am sure this question has been asked a thousand times before, but I wanted to get your input on my first brew. It is an American Amber that I brewed back on September 27th. Everything in the brewing process went fine and my fermentation appeared to go well. This Sunday, the...

    Oil Slick in beer

What did you use to sanitze your equipment? I hear that some commercial sanitizers (like Starsan) can leave an oil slick on the top of your beer.

    Grain "Dust"

Thanks for the feedback. One of the problems is that I can't tell if the grains were crushed or not. From looking at them, they appear to the eye as if they might have been crushed. However, the instructions that came with the kit say that if the kit comes with specialty grains . . . you...

    Grain "Dust"

Hi All, I am brewing my first batch tomorrow. It will be an American Amber extract kit that I ordered from Norther Brewer. In looking through the ingrediants, I noticed that the bag of specialty grains has a lot of "dust" in it. By dust I mean a lot of fine powder that was obviously...

    Blow-Off Tube

Thanks mkory. I actually haven't started brewing yet, it was just a general question. However, no matter what beer I brew, I think you have answered my question. Maybe you need it and maybe you don't . . . but why not do it anyway just to be safe. Sound reasoning that makes sense. Thanks...

    Blow-Off Tube

Newbie question here. I am wondering how many of you use a blow-off tube and how many of you don't. In reading the posts on this forum, some people refer to using a blow-off tube on their primary and some people talk about just going straight to their airlock after pitching. I have a...

    Wort Chilling - Beginner Question

Thanks JVD_X. I was planning to boil the water addition prior to preparing my wort and then let it cool down to room temperature and sit until I needed to add it to my carboy. Not sure if it is necessary to boil this water addition, but thought it couldn't hurt. Good to know that if I do go...

    Wort Chilling - Beginner Question

Hi All. New to homebrewing and this forum, but hope to brew my first batch this coming weekend or next. I have a quick question about wort chilling. I purchased a wort chiller, but also intend on adding additional water to my wort when I move it to my carboy to bring it up to the 5 gallon...
