Why I Use *Primo* Water Brand When Brewing

hippies. love em or hate em. understand them or not. my depleted uranium boil kettle is the shining star of my homebrew club. it holds temp like crazy and is made of 100% recycled material. some say i'm a hippie with my head up my ass, but i don't care. somebody's got to do it.

    2 Basic questions

    1) i used to use hop bags with very good results, but i still had a good bit of coagulated protein trub. cooling your wort and then whirlpooling works great to settle out hop matter and coagulated proteins. give it a really good swirl and let it sit for 20-30min. then just siphon into your...

    Some carb/some not

i also "quietly" mix in my priming sugar. as long as you mixed pretty well, there should be at least SOME carbonation in those problem bottles. a couple duds would indicate dud gaskets. i've used recycled grolsch bottles almost exclusively for the past 2 years. if a few bottles are...

    Can I use this Carboy?

i'm assuming you've used a carboy brush with no effect. i would try the suggestions listed above, but if they don't work, i would not use the carboys for fear of infectious organisms taking up residency in the etches. any idea what the carboys were used for? might have originally held...

    Am I wasting my money?

once used dme on an abbey ale. results were good. other than that batch , i stick to corn sugar. its cheap as long as you don't buy single batch measurements for $.75-$1.00. 5lb bag from my overpriced LHBS for $5.50 will prime alot of batches...and it doesn't turn into a rock if it gets a...

Testing the limits of yeast viability

btw, i've never boiled my slurry bottles/jars. just soaked them in a strong solution of iodaphor...probably 4-5x recommended strength lately, i've been washing my yeast. i boil my water to remove the oxygen, but i still just sanitize in strong iodaphor. no problems as of yet with 4 batches...

Testing the limits of yeast viability

wow, resurrected thread, but i'll chime in: how to tell on the fly? other than i microscope, i don't know any tell-tale signs. a starter is the only definite test i can perform. i'm no expert, but i had an 10oz jar of wlp400 wit slurry hanging out in my fridge for at least 6 months...

ready to get into all grain brewing

good to see the big bag worked. do you normally have to add rice hulls to your MTL, or is that because of all the wheat in the hefe? thanks for the input, guys!

ready to get into all grain brewing

ya, i've been doing full boils with 3-5lb of grain in a bag then adding LME. started off using partial boils, but it seems like full boils are more consistent, have better hop utilization, and light colored ales come out lighter than those i did with partial boils. so the zapap LT works...

ready to get into all grain brewing

in the past 2 1/2 years i have over 2 dozen partial mash beers under belt and i'm looking to increase my brewing frequency to at least 5gallons per week. looking at my costs, most of my brews turn out cheaper per ounce than unsatisfying american 6 packs. to further cut costs, i substitute...
