    stuck stout

Hi all! Brewed an extract (my third ) batch of oatmeal stout. It's OG was 1.067. The recipe suggests (beersmith) that it will finish at 1.016 It has been in primary for almost 30 days and is reading 1.032. sitting at around 68-72 degrees for the entire time. What should i do? (By the...

Fermentation lock versus blow off tube

I've only done three batches but learned the hard way to start using a blow off every time at least for the first 3-5 days. I did a hefe that sprayed krausen all over the living room...twice. Never again

    First stout

I'm didn't really have a style of stout in mind. I guess i was just looking for a coffee type stout with OG around 1.65 Is 6lbs of DME too much to be adding at the end?

    First stout

the NB are 8.4. AA I changed the numbers in Beersmith and used 3lbs of Dark DME at the beginning and the rest for late addition and i came up with 24 IBU's So i guess this is much better for the IBU's?

    First stout

I'm doing a partial boil 5 gallon batch. I was told not to bother with late extract since im not trying to lighten the color of the beer. I'm using 6 lbs of Dark DME and 1.5 lbs of Light DME perhaps i should do a late extract addition anyway?

    First stout

Hey guys. Brewing my first exract stout and after plugging the numbers into Beersmith i'm only getting 12.8 IBU's. I cam up with the recipe myself (perhaps this is foolish) and im only using 10z of NB bittering hops at 60 min. In all the styles of stouts that Beersmith list none are...

    A Tale Of Two Beers

Hey guys. I have had my first two batches (hefe and APA) bottled for 3 weeks now. I used a secondary for the pale but not for the hefe. I also used a whirlfloc in the pale and had it fementing for total of three weeks as opposed to the hefe which i bottled after only 9 days. Here's the...

    From kettle to carboy

Paid a visit to my LHBS and picked up a funnel and screen expecting to simplify and shorten the time involved in transferring to primary. Cooled the wort, sanitised the equipment and popped the filter into the bottom of the funnel. What i found was that i constantly had to try and scrape the...

    How accurate is Beersmith?

Recently purchased Beersmith and brewed my third (extract ) batch tonight. I decided on an ESB and didn't use a specific recipe. According to Beersmith with the extract and hops and late addition boil i should get an OG of 1.054 My actual OG was 1.057. Is this a normal deviation for...

Bottle exploded. Where did i go wrong?

MOD EDIT: Threads merged (no need for two separate discussions). So i came home from work and found that i did not have any more explosions. I took the advice of a few here and decided to crack a couple open. I found that after only 48 hours the beer is heavily carbonated. It poured a...

Bottle exploded. Where did i go wrong?

I have to admit that the beer only reached the gravity i expected. I didn't wait to see if it stayed the same for a few days in a row. I realize now that was probably a mistake. Yikes. Now im really worried. Im putting the bottles somewhere safe imediately

Bottle exploded. Where did i go wrong?

Bottled my first batch, a hefe, yesterday after 9 days in primary. The recipe was extract and final gravity had been reached before i bottled. I used 3/4 cup of dextrose with 1 1/2 cups of water and boiled for 5 minutes. Then racked the beer into a bottling bucket on top of the sugar. I am...

    Yellow lidded Oxiclean

I have some ancient bottles that needed cleaning so i looked on the search here and found people recommend Oxiclean. The only oxiclean i could find last night was the yellow lidded one (that i believe has fragrance) The stuff works great. I soaked the 25 year old bottles last night in cold...

    very old beer bottles

Hey gang. Getting ready to bottle my first batch and i found on craigslist 8 cases of the old stubby beer bottles from a guy who hasn't brewed in about 5 years. He claims he rinsed them after each use and they have been stored upside down in his basement since his last batch. I currently have...

Wife's reaction to new brewing hobby?

I've only been dating my girlfriend for a little over 6 months. We recently moved in together and i've already heard "So you are brewing, and now you don't have to buy any beer at the store?" Lol. I haven't had the heart to tell her the truth just yet

I have about 3 cases of brown 500ml plastic bottles that i got from a brew on premise before i got into homebrewing. I'm ready soon to bottle my first batch so the question is... How long will the beer keep in thse bottles? I'm told if you store them on their sides they will last longer...
