Stainless shanks imparting a metal taste

I just replaced all of my old chrome/brass shanks because they were turning green, had a slight brassy taste on first pours, and I couldn't get them clean. I purchased new stainless shanks from micromatic to match up with my perlicks but if he beer is sitting in the lines for more than an hour...

    Mashing-Water or Grain First?

I personally like adding the water first, grain second. That way the initial water addition pre-heats the mash tun and I can add the grain exactly when the water hits the right strike temp. I feel I have less variables when I do this. I've never had an issue with dough balls even with some of...

    Barley Crusher - Stuck Sparge

Could be many different factors. Obviously, the tighter crush of your new mill can contribute to it but I would look at doing some other things first before you adjust settings (you mentioned 75% efficiency and that is exactly what I get with my setup with no stuck sparges). Things to think...

    Question for Danby DKC645BLS owners

I have that kegerator and I can fit 3 kegs, a 5lb C02 tank and a three regulator manifold inside. It's tight but doable.

Keg frustration - leak - what now?

Star San in a spray bottle works well for finding leaks too. Just another piece of advice... prior to filling your keg with beer, clean it, sanitize it, and hit it with 30 psi and check for leaks. It's better to find a leak prior to filling it. As long as you don't have any leaks in your...

How much does it cost you for your CO2?

Tops rocks at only $1/lb. There is a beer store near me in Gilbert that charged me $4/lb to fill my 5lb tank. Since that fill up I went out and bought a second tank so I can fill the extra one up at Tops whenever I'm up in Tempe.

Using Knox gelatin for the 1st time

I've used knox for some of my kegged blondes and lighter pale ales with great results although I've never done a side by side comparison of the same brew with and w/o using the gelatin so I don't know if there is a taste difference in IBU's like one previous poster mentioned. All I know is that...

Effect of temp drift during the mash

So I could do a little experimentation on some future brews but was wondering if anyone already has this knowledge. Would these 2 scenarios result in a wort with the same amount of fermentable sugars and achieve the same attenuation assuming they are the exact same brews with all details...

    Efficiencies Question

Sounds like you might be having a pH issue in the mash being that your efficiencies are changing based on the color of your beer. Check out Palmer's charts. This is just one potential cause though with advice coming from a brewing newbie. Have you still had large repeatable differences...

Don't let Iodophor solution sit in your beer lines

So I ended up replacing the line and the problem has dissapeared... no more weird taste in that line. I did leave some star san in another line and it will be another week or so before I hook a keg up to it... we'll see if that leaves any weird taste. I doubt it will though.

    Kegerator Suggestions?

I purchased a danby from costco earlier this year and it has worked well for me and can fit 3 cornies, a three regulator manifold, and a 5lb CO2 tank inside. Converting it to a three keg setup wasn't cheap though. Going with Perlick's, stainless tower, etc with all of the other parts was...

    Help with efficency

When I bought my barley crusher my efficiency not only went up but became very consistent at 75% batch after batch mashing at either 1.25 or 1.33 qt/lb. Prior to that I was having my LHBS precrush my grains and i was averaging anywhere between 55-65% efficiency.

    what tower to buy? model#d4743dt?

If you are going to piece meal it together you can beat acumetalfab.com. That is where I ordered my stainless 3 faucet tower and I couldn't be happier.

Best commercial beer bottles for homebrew

Bear Republic bottles have worked very well for me. Seems like they use thick/strong glass for the bottles and the labels just fall off when soaked in oxyclean and hot water solution. There's very little glue residue to scrub off as well. It's on the expensive side for buying in mass qty...

Don't let Iodophor solution sit in your beer lines

Hmmm.... I ordered my 3/16" line from CHI company when I ordered my kegs, regulator manifold, etc when I was setting up to run 3 kegs. It has "FOXX SUPERFLEX" written on the actual line. I've used the same tubing for all 3 beer lines in my 3 corny setup and I've never had this issue...

Don't let Iodophor solution sit in your beer lines

Yep... I'll end up giving that a try this week. I've been hesitant on swapping the line since I have a 3 faucet tower and its kind of a pain to swap just one out without removing the tower and all of the shanks. We'll see if I can gumby my way around it.

Don't let Iodophor solution sit in your beer lines

I made the mistake of cleaning out one of my 3 beer lines out a couple weeks before I hooked a keg up to it. During this time, I left iodophor solution in the line to keep it sanitized. Unfortunately, after I hooked the keg up, I got a really strong medicinal/iodophor taste on the first pour...

For those who dry hop in the keg...

What is the best way to do this and be able to get the hops out after a week or so? I was thinking about using an herb ball but don't know how those of you who use them get them out. I did see in one post that somebody JB welded a hook to hang a bag from but was wondering if there was a...

How important is it to use keg lube...

I'm guessing using keg lube can't hurt but I haven't used any yet and I've had no problems/leaks at all. My disconnects might be a little sticky after they've sat for a long time but that is the only thing i've noticed. I use my keg/CO2 to pump sanitizer through my beer lines and I usually...

    Attenuating too low

So go figure... all three of the thermometers that I have are off! I have two floating thermometers and one lab thermometer... and they're all off by 1-3 degrees which had me mashing lower than expected. Before, I assumed that the lab thermometer was spot on and the other two floating...
