    Beginner's kit or "la carte"?

Many kits come a with glass thermometer. Check out the digital cooking thermometers. They are only 15-20 bucks and you don't have to worry about them breaking. Plus they are easy to read. I just got one and love it. :mug:

    First brew with many mishaps.

Take a gravity reading. If it is high give it a few days and take another to see if it is dropping. If it is the same you can pitch more yeast. If you are fermenting in a bucket it may look like its not doing anything because the seal is leaking. Check out a wine/beer thief online for easy...

    Mash Question

Mashing a recipe that calls for 11.75 lbs. of grain. Papazian suggests 1 quart of strike water for every pound of grain. He then suggests .5 gallon sparge water for every 1 pound of grain. Even after boil off and grain water retention I am left with about 7 gallons of wert. I am shooting for a 5...

    Nube nube nube

morebeer.com has good starter kits. I would recomend getting a 10 gallon brew kettle. If you want to upgrade to all grain your not stuck having to buy another pot. happy brewing:mug:

    First brew day in pictures.....

Cheers on your first brew:mug:. The hardest part for me is the waiting.

Why does my beer have no alcohol?

How long are you letting your beer bottle condition? My extract brews start out a little watery, but after 4-5 weeks they have much better mouth feel/body. It sucks waiting, but maybe it just needs more time.

Cost vs. Labor - Before I do anything!

Agree, and the first time you hand over a bottle of your brew for someone to taste and they say "it tastes like beer", its really satisfying...or annoying on second thought.

Going to need a Propane Burner...........

I have the same one and it works very well. It will boil 8 gallons in about 30 minutes. Its sturdy too.

why CA is #1, yet again

Aside from the gridlock this is an interesting ratio: For every phone in the Country, California has 10 gang bangers.:(

    Krausen in the blowoff tube

Agree, although I started to fill the airlock with star san. After it settles down throw on the airlock and you are good to go. Only problem is not having more carboys for the next batch.:drunk:

lactose in stout when/how to add

I usually add lactose in the last 5-10 minutes of the boil, but it should be fine to boil with priming sugar at bottling time. Chocolate cream stout...sounds good!

    Mash Tun air bubbles?

Thanks Lamarguy. I checked the bulkhead fitting and no leaks on the inside or out. So I am not goint to worry about it. This was the last piece of equipment and I am ready to brew AG.

    Mash Tun air bubbles?

I am new to AG. I put together a 52 quart tun with a copper pipe minifold. When I drain the cooler into the brewpot it pulls a lot of air bubbles with it. I only open the valve part way which helps but I am concerned about oxidation. Is this something I should be worried about?

    coleman extreme on sale

Thanks, I will try this. I was curious what your efficiency is with the 70 quart? I picked up the 52 quart, but if you have good efficiency I will just use the new one down the road.

Extract to All Grain - Please Critique prospective Puchase

Agree. I just switched over to AG. I think you could save some bucks by building your own. My setup was less money than that and was fun to build.:drunk:

    coleman extreme on sale

Thanks big time. I am crossing over to all grain and threw together a 70 quart cooler MLT. Problem is its hard to hold the temp with that much air space. This is a good fix. Thanks :mug:

    Wheat Beer + Raspberry Help

I would suggest going easy with the extract first, then build on your second batch. I ruined a cherry stout by adding too much extract a few years ago. I ended up with 5 gallons of room freshener.... it still bothers me.

    Misread the Hydrometer...

Hi there, What was the gravity before you pitched the yeast? If you don't know, give me the recipe and I might be able to help.
