    please confirm my sugar calc

I'm steam juicing some muscadines. My refrac reads 1.023. My calcs tell me to add 1.3 lbs sugar per gallon to get it to 1.090. Thanks in advance.

    Whirlpool automation

Has anyone ever used an old ice cream freezer motor and the paddle thing that goes down in the tub to automate their whirlpool?

A crazy idea to sweeten cider?

What if you were to mash some 2 row at about 165 to get a half gallon or so of very sweet (say about 1090) very unfermentable wort and throw that in with about 5 gal of apple juice to make hard cider? I'd like to end up with a FG of about 1012 which would be just slightly sweet. I couldn't...

1st time adding corn s in boil, beer is cloudy

I added a lb of corn sugar to the boil ( a typical 1050 pale ale) and used irish moss as usual. Normally my beer comes out very clear but these 2 batches are cloudy. The beer tastes great, nice hop odor from the dry hops. I was just wondering if anyone else has had this happen i.e. did adding...

Ok, I know this is crazy but...

My wife and I just got through blanching ~300 ears of corn. that water left in my brew pot sure looks like it has a lot of starch in it. I wonder if i threw in a couple lbs of dme and some corn sugar, boiled it, hoped it, cooled it and put it on top of a yeast cake in one of my fermenters...

Aeration after cooling down in the freezer?

I can only get my temps down with my IM here in the south to about 85, but I want to pitch my hydrated s05 cool (about 65). So, I put the buckets in my temp controlled freezer until they get there, then pitch. My question is, should I aerate, finish cooling to 65, then pitch or finish cooling...

    adding corn sugar during/after fermentation?

Is there any infection risk to adding dry corn sugar to a batch as primary fermentation is winding down?

My gas was gone in about 2 days

I hooked up my new tanks and noticed the guage that shows how much gas you have showed barely over the red "order new gas" zone. Did I get a tank that was not full? I'm new at this and didn't hear a leak but maybe there was one. The kegs came with a new oring kit but also came pressurized so...

    It's amazing...

It's amazing how consistent the spray from a blown fermentation covers the entire inside of my freezer lid. Little dot's all over the f'n place. The cat's that design spray nozzles should check air lock tops out. As I scrubed the lid, I once again wondered why I didn't put a blow of hose on...

    Small gusher, pour then flat

Got an AG batch, OG 1.052, FG 1.01, Blonde ale, s-05, 5 oz cane sugar, 3 weeks at 70, 1 week in fridge. The beer tastes fine but when I first open a bottle, I get a slight gusher. I pour slowly in a clean glass and initially I get some head but within a minute or 2 it pretty much is gone and...

2 AG batches in 1 day. Made some errors...

Batch 1 a simple blond ale 9 lb 2 row, 1 lb crystal 60, .5 lb carapils mashed at 153 for an hour, batch sparged at 170, collected 6.25 gal. I put the bittering hops (cascade 1.5 oz) but forgot the aroma hop (cascade .5 oz). I forgot the 5.2 stabilizer, yeast nutrient too. Pitched coopers, no...

    First lager question please!

After I get my lager wort to 70 with my IMC, should I pitch the yeast then or put the fermenter in the freezer and cool it further to 50 (where it will be fermenting for 2 weeks) and then pitch. From a practical standing point, I would think it would be ok to just pitch at 70, and put it in the...

So, what do ya do when...

the swmbo picks fun at your glass of homebrew because it doesn't have as much "lacing" as her glass of commercial swill? 1. Point out that we could adopt a rule that from now on, only homebrew would be permitted in the house. 2. knock her up side the head 3. work on lacing properties in the...

    carapils vs crystal

I searched but couldn't find the answer to this. Does a crystal malt contribute to body, head retention the same as carapils? In other words if your recipe for a simple american pale ale was 8 lbs 2 row and 1 lb of crystal 60 (which I know contributes non fermentable sweetness) would it help...

    Here's the experiment I did

I brewed this recipe: 6 lb light LME 1/2 lb honey malt 1/2 lb crystal 10l 1 oz cascade 60 min 1 oz Kent Goldings 2 min coopers ale yeast Then I did my first AG batch with the same recipe except of course I used 9 lb of rahr 2 row in place of the LME. I got really good eff (mid 70's). So, I...

    CPVC Manifold

I"m about to build my lauter manifold from cpvc in a rectangular cooler as per Palmers design recommendations. I've read posts that say not to glue the pieces together in order to be able to take them apart and clean them easier, but what about when you mash in the same cooler? Doesn't the...

    Recipe for Dark Heineken?

I found me a almost new 7 cu ft freezer on craigs list for $60:ban: so when I get my temp controller, I'll be able to do lagers :rockin: So, has anyone got a dark heinekin clone recipe? (Either extract or All Grain would be fine) It was always one of my favorite commercial beers but never...

5 gal boil effect on fermentation

Did my first 2 batches yesterday via turkey fryer and full 5 gal boils. Now today, I have the most beautiful vigorous fermentations going yet. :ban: On the stout, I've had to rig up a blowoff hose and that thing is going crazy. Both are extract batches a blond ale that I pitched Coopers dry...

    First 5 gal boil observations

Finally got my im chiller and turkey fryer and boiled up a couple 5 gal extract batches yesterday. Here are some observations I would love to hear comments on: 1. I was surprised how high I had to turn that fryer up to get 5 gal of water (I did a 1st boil of water only to "condition the...

    ball valves HD vs online

Tried to find the answer to this with search. No luck. Is the ball valves you can get at HD/Lowes the same as those you buy from a online store like northern brewer or Midwest. The guy's at Hd told me the valves they had were not for hot applications. Thanks
