    CO2 tank worries

I am heading home (LA), as I just graduated from college. I am currently at 7,000 feet and my destination is at sea level (just about). I am worried about taking the CO2 tank down in elevation. I will be driving through desert, so the temperature will probably rise, even though it has been...

    Fermentation Chiller Q

I am planning on getting a larger cooler to ferment my beer in (I live in AZ now, so the temp is hard to control). I am going to make a hole for the airlock and maybe place a few freezer packs in the cooler to keep the temp down. Nevertheless, I would like to be able to read the temperature...

    Hop utilization

I use "BeerTools" to help calculate my recipes. "BeerTools" does not ask when you add your extract during the boil, so I was wondering when it assumes I add the extract. I would think the program calculates everyting under the assumption that I add the extract before the boil. However, I...

    Boil volume

Hello, I have a question regarding my final volume after the boil. I brew three-gallon batches due to a limited kitchen and space. Here is how I usual brew: 1) Mash in 1 gallon of water (have a 2 gallon kettle) 2) Steep with 0.5 gallons hot water 3) Add half LME while bringing wort to...

    First Porter

What do you guys think about this Porter recipe? I really enjoy stones smoked porter, but I would like to make a porter that is a little creamier and sweeter, rather than smoky. Although, I don't want to completely skimp on the smoky flavor. Anyway, I figured the Crystal 60L and...

    Pale Ale recipe

Hey everyone, I am trying to come up with a crisp / slightly hoppy pale ale recipe. I don't want it to be overly malty and sweet. I just want a light and smooth drink that is easy to enjoy. I just made a really hoppy IPA (mmm...delicious) and now I feel I am ready for a lighter summer drink...

    Low OG reading

I brewed a Bitter Brown Ale yesterday and my OG was 1.045 (after the yeast had been added; I forgot to take the sample beforehand). According to Beertools my OG ought to be about 1.067. I have no idea what went wrong, because I have done similar recipes many times. This was a 3-gallon batch...

    new keg...new questions

Hi, I just got a 3-gallon corny keg system in the mail. It barely fits into my fridge alone, but does not fit (with all the food) with the 5-gallon co2 tank next to it. I may have jumped the gun getting a keg. So, I was wondering if I were to force carb the beer (i.e., hit it with 30psi...

    fermentation temp Q

Hi, I have a question about fermentation temperature. It is officially summer time and the stick on thermometer reads about 70 to 75F throughout the day. Is this too high to be fermenting an IPA? If so, I was thinking about filling my tub up during the day and just letting it sit in the...

    West Coast IPA recipe

I have been working on a west coast IPA recipe and I would like to know what you guys think. I am going for a Green Flash IPA meets Bells Two Hearted Ales (Midwest, I know...) kind of ale. I really enjoy smoothness of the Bells IPA and the nice mouth feel after taking a sip / gulp. However, I...

    Kegging a small batch

Quick question: will filling only half a keg cause any issues? I made a small 1.5 gallon batch of beer and I just bought a 3 gallon corny get system. So, I will only be using half of the keg. I feel that all that head space may cause some issues, but I am not sure. Thanks wrong forum, sorry!

    more hops?

I have scaled back my batch size to 3-gallons and I now boil only 1.5 gallons. Thus, the boil is a lot denser. Do I need to add more hops to get the same bittering I would get from boiling 3-gallons? Beer tools is kind of confusing me, because it indicates that I will more hop utilization...

Fermenting time for small batch size

Hello, I brewed a 1.5-gallon batch of a strong brown ale two days ago and I was wondering how long I should expect it to take to ferment. I am use to brewing 5-gallon batches, so I am not sure if the timing is any different for smaller scale batches. I used about 70-80% of a vile of white...

How much yeast to add for 1.5 gallon brew?

I am using a the typical vial of white labs English ale yeast and need to know how much to add for a 1.5-gallon batch. On the back of the vile it says the amount is for a 5-gallon batch. A lot of fluid is in it, so should I shake it up for even disbursement and then eyeball about 33% of it...

    Reducing batch size

Hello, when I'm home with my friends we usually brew 5-gallon batches, but I live in a very small apartment at school with a dinky kitchen. One of my friends has an old Mr. Beer kit and said I could take it back with me. The tank it comes with is only 2 gallons, but that’s perfect for me. The...
