    Rooibos Red Tea Ale

I've based this recipe on several others I've seen here, but I figured I'd see if anyone had any input about it. I was always been curious about what adding a hint of rye flavor to this type of beer, I'm thinking about reducing it a little more just so there are more background notes of it, or...

    Alpha Acid Tesing advice

I will soon be harvesting my hops and plan on using a lab to test for the the % AA using the ASBC method involving a spectrophotometer. I was wondering if anyone has done this lab analysis on their own and would have any advice for running it? The procedure can be found at here...

    Remove Solder from copper coil

I'm finishing building a fermentaion fridge that I've used an old water cooler compressor for cooling it. I've run into the problem that the copper pipes that comes off of it( the exchange area for cooling) are coiled about six time and then at one spot they are soldered together with a smaller...

    Hop spacing issue

I think I'll just leave them for the summer then since they are already both above 6 ft tall and then tranplant them in the fall. Thank you for the help

    Hop spacing issue

So I purchased 1 mt hood and 1 Golding rhizome last summer and grew them in pots. Around the end of the summer I put them in the ground and let them grow a little before it got cold. I intended to have the area I was going to grow them in cleared and ready by the start of this summer but I don't...

    Pilsner Recipe question

I guess i worded my question wrong, I really was wondering about about things I could do to have a little bit of sweetness in my beer after fermentation. Usually when I mash i mash at lower temps to get a somewhat drier beer so i was wondering if i decided to mash a little higher and get a less...

    Pilsner Recipe question

The other week I was out in Montana and I tried the Pilsner from Bayern Brewing Company. It was medium bodied and a good balance between bitterness and maltyness for a pils, it also had a slightly sweet maltyness to it that I really liked. I was working on designing a pils recipe and I...

Old frozen yeast viability = good

What was your glycerin/water/yeast ratio? I just froze some yeast (wlp029) and I unfroze one after 2 weeks and it took off after 1 day, but 13 months is good to hear. I mixed 5 ml of 15% glycerin/water with 5 ml of thick yeast slurry.

    K-Nex Centrifuge

I was preparing yeast for freezing the otherday and thinking how a centrifuge would be useful. Then I remembered one of my favorite toys as a kid...K-Nex I calculated the rpm's to be around 350 to 400 with 2 arms, it can have up to 8 arms but the rpms would decrease. I just tape or...

    yeast washing

I actually took a sample of the bottom layer and made a small starter and it was fermenting away within 24 hours. So I used larger amounts of water to wash the bottom layer more and after several washes it looks just like the picture that Yooperbrew posted.

    yeast washing

I was looking around and I found a picture on this thread that looks a lot like mine. The picture on that thread shows wlp002 which is a very flocculant strain similar to wlp029, The bottom layer in the picture and in my jar look very similar so I'm assuming that as Buzzcraft said my yeast will...

    yeast washing

I'm in the middle of washing my yeast and I was wondering if anyone could just give me a little information on what is in each of the layers in the picture. I was assuming that the bottom layer consists mostly of the trub and such, the middle and top layers would be mostly yeast. Am I correct...

    Hand tap to sanke coupler

Has anyone ever tried converting a sanke hand tap into a sanke keg coupler? It seems like it shoudn't be too much work to do. It would be cheaper to just buy a coupler but once in a while I've come across taps that the hand pump has broken on, and it seems like a waste just to throw them out...
