How much liquid do you typically lose in the primary?

So I just bottled my barleywine. It's been in the primary for just over a month, and it has CRAZY yeast activity the first week. That said, there wasn't too much blowoff (maybe 1/4 gallon MAX). 6 gallons went into the fermenter easy, and when I bottled today, I siphoned 5 gallons of beer off...

Swad's "Sakar" Sugar = Clear Belgian Sugar Substitute?

Hi all, So while browsing the local Asian market for citric acid (to make my own belgian sugar), I saw packets of Swad brand "Sakar" sugar. It looks sort of like clear belgian candi sugar (the hard stuff, not the liquid). I can't find much about this stuff on the internet (other than it's...

Should I be pissed at my LHBS?

So I went to my LHBS asking for Wyeast Trappist High Gravity yeast (*edit*3787), and they said 'oh, we don't have that, but the white labs 550 is a perfect substitute. So I say 'ok' and buy it. ...From what I can tell, WL550 is Belgian Ale Yeast, and not a 'perfect substitute' for trappist...

Cold crashing my carboy - temp to bottle at?

So as the title says, I've been cold crashing my 5 gallon better bottle of Baltic Porter (it's gonna be soooooo good :ban:). It's in my mini-fridge hovering just above freezing. I'd like to bottle it sometime this week, sooo... 1. What temp should it be for bottling (regular ~70 degrees?)...

Anyone try Sugar Free Syrup for flavoring?

Thinking of making some odd combinations (Peanut Butter Porter, Cinnamon Stout, etc), and came across these Da Vinci Sugar Free Syrups: http://www4.netrition.com/davinci_syrups_page.html Here's a sample of what's in the nutrition information for the cinnamon one: Water, spice extract...

Will 'chill haze' bottle condition out?

Just a quick question, and getting overwhelmed with the 'chill haze bottle condition' search results that aren't what I'm looking for: If I have chill haze in my blonde ale (didn't dry hop), but it's only been in the bottle a week (I know, i know, wait 3... I like to compare as the process goes...

*sigh* At what temp is a 'cold fermented' ale?

Alright, I've been trying to navigate google search for HBT, but the only stuff I'm finding deals with lagering and/or lager yeast, so some non-noob please answer my noob question that I should have been able to otherwise find with searching: For something like a Baltic Porter, where the BJCP...

Interest in an Albany, NY/Southern VT area bulk grain buy?

Hi all, After seeing the NYC/NJ bulk grain buy, I'm jealous. I'll just say up front that I don't have the logistics or location to set a bulk buy up for the Albany, NY/Southern VT area myself, but I'd definitely be interested for a few sacks if someone is willing to coordinate...

Please critique my Kasteelbier Bruin-Brune Recipe

So I just had Kasteelbier Bruin-Brune (aka Bière du Chateau Donker), and I'm in love. I want to try and brew this huge, heavy, sweet/malty Belgian Quad(?). Never made a Belgian anything before (not a fan of the Ommegang dirty-foot taste), but the Kasteel was amazing (and not footy at all), so...

Baltic Porter Recipe - Comments welcome

Hi all, Trying to replicate Baltika No 6 (a Baltic Porter). This is what I came up with so far, based on the brewery's description of their ingredients, and the BJCP guide for what's typically used in this type of beer: 12 lbs Pale 2-row (Canada, because that's what I have :)) 8 oz Crystal...

    Screwdriver bolt for Corona Mill?

Hi all, So I picked up a Corona (Grizzly) mill for AG, and I've read threads where the handle screw was replaced with some type of drill bit. I'm wondering if anyone has a part number for lowes/hd for what i'd be looking for (or at least a general description of it), or if you had to special...

    Attention DIYers...

Make sure to cut AWAY from you when using a large folding knife, so you don't have to spend 2 hours at the urgent care center like I did today. Good news is that I don't need stitches (apparently wasn't quite deep enough to warrant them), bad news is I'm out my $15 copay and 2 hours of brewing...

Albany, NY area: Trade my hop pellets for your Hallertauer pellets

Hi, I just got 9 pounds of hops from hopsdirect, but didn't think to grab hallertauer/hersbrucker, which I only use in one recipe. Anyway, if anyone in the Albany, NY area has extra hallertauer/hersbrucker pellets, and wants to do a 1:1 trade for other pellets (up to maybe 1/2 pound or so?)...
