    Scottish online brew supply shops?

Looking to buy a high quality starter kit to send to a family member in the Highlands. Anyone familiar with shops that have decent online stores in the UK, preferably Scotland? Something like this would be great https://www.northernbrewer.com/brew-share-enjoy-homebrew-starter-kit

Schlafly ESB (2009 winter seasonal) clone...any ideas?

I'm so hooked on Schlafly's ESB this year. Incredibly drinkable, huge off-white head and no cloying sweetness or bitterness. Amazing! Here is their description: Winter ESB October 30 This Extra Special Bitter is an amber-colored, malty ale with plenty of hops to balance the flavor...

Does anyone know what the value "Tun T/M" means in the Beer Alchemy strike temperature calculator?

    Dough-in (or "water-in") method?

I've been doing my first few AG's by following John Palmer's methods in How to Brew. He stresses to add preheat the MLT, and then add the mash water to the grain -- not the other way around. I've seen quite a few folks here preheat their tun with 180º water and wait for it to settle to strike...

My First AG recipe: Date Beer

This is my first shot at a recipe. The brew day went great. I wasn't really trying to stay true to an American Amber, but it seemed appropriate looking at my grain bill. I sort of winged my hop additions because well...I could! I also picked up a 500g bottle of Date Extract (Dadelstroop) from...

    Chicago Water Alkalinity?

I've searched around and have also received the water report from the city of Chicago, but I still have not been able to find out the Alkalinity of Lake Michigan water in/around Chicago. Can anyone help me out? :(

    Coolers for HLT: why?

This may be a dumb question... but i dont understand why people use coolers as hot liquor tanks. Isn't the idea to heat your mash and sparge waters to the right temperature and transfer them to the mash tun? It seems like an extra step to heat it, move it to a big picnic cooler and then move it...

    Internal vs. ambient fermenation temperature

I have read here that the internal temperature of the fermenting beer can be as much as 7º warmer than the ambient temperature. My fridge reads 63º and the stick on thermometer on my better bottle reads 68º. How accurate are those stick on thermometers? I have the johnson analog thermostat, so...

need help with this Anchor Liberty Ale Recipe

I'm obsessed with Anchor Liberty Ale lately and would love to do it as my first partial mash. Here's a recipe I've found by doing some googling: Anchor Liberty Ale 11 lbs Pale 2-row 10 oz Crystal 20°L (they suggest mashing at 149° for 90 mins) 8 AAU of Northern Brewer pellets for 60...

anyone have any good boil recipes for your turkey fryers?

I just picked this bayou classic fryer kit up from craigslist ($40!). I'm going to this little folk festival this weekend and was really hoping to do a fun seafood boil type of meal for a big group. Any good recipes? Crab/clam/crawfish boil? Also open to some other good recipes that make use...

what can cause improper gravity readings?

Besides temperature, are there certain things/tips to consider when taking a gravity reading. I ask because I was racking to secondary and when tilting my carboy a lot of the yeast cake stirred up. I was wondering if that could contribute to an improper gravity reading. Also, how do you guys...

    cold crash confusion

hey folks, I know there are a lot of beginner posts about cold crashing...my apologies if I'm overlooking the answer somewhere else. I'm making EdWorts Pale Ale and FG is at 1.022 (after 19 days in primary)– so probably not quite done yet. Am I correct in assuming that one should never cold...

    post some links: label inspiration

The Dieline has a section an Wine/Spirits/Beer packaging. There's some pretty novel stuff up there. I'm sure there's a lot more beer packaging reference out there on the innernets... let's see 'em! here's a personal favorite...

    kit upgrade recommendations?

I bottled the Altbier I made with my Brewers Best equipment kit and ingredient kit on Friday. Looks like things are running along pretty smoothly. SWMBO can't get me to shut up about brewing... The worst thing with this kit, however, is that f***ing bottle capper (you know, the red clampy...

    is this over my head?

This seasonal from Austin Homebrew sounds amazing... has anyone tried it? Would this be way over my head for my second brew ever? I don't think i'm ready for all grain, but mini-mash seems like something I'd like to try.

Hi there. This is my first HBT post. I have to say, ya'll have helped me out tremendously! So I purchased my gear and a Brewers Best ingredient kit and began my "German Altbier" a week ago. It's been in primary for 7 days. Unfortunately, the weather here in Chicago has been incredibly hot...
